Yoga Postures Explained

Yoga is a science and art that helps an individual lead a healthy and content life. On one hand, it aids us in getting a healthy body, and on the other it helps us learn how to control our mind. Once these goals are achieved, it can even lead us to a path of self enlightenment. Yoga makes use of Asanas, or Yoga Postures to help make our body healthy and free of ailments, while it uses meditation to help control our mind.

There are many different styles of Yoga which make use of a combination of different Yoga Poses to achieve the desired outcome. This adaptability of Yoga is what has enabled its survival through 5 millenniums. However, no matter what style of Yoga you choose to follow, the basic types of Yoga Asanas remain the same. Here are Yoga Postures Explained:

Seated Poses

Yoga employs seated poses mainly for breathing and relaxation exercises. These are also typically used as warm up exercises before starting a Yoga session. These seated poses allow you to center your attention to what you are doing at the moment and ready yourself for the rest of the Yoga session. These poses help improve your posture.

Standing Poses

These Yoga poses are also typically used as warm up exercises and involve little stretching. They help your body warm up as well as help strengthen your legs.

Lying Down Poses

These Yoga asana are usually done at the end of the Yoga session and allow you the opportunity to let your entire body be relaxed and to center your mind. In this poses, you will be able to feel the energy present throughout your body.

Inversions

In these poses you actually invert your body to a certain degree. This allows for better circulation and aids in getting better overall health. This poses require a quiet mind and hence also have the effect of steadying your mind. These poses are also said to help elongate life.

Counter Poses

When you stretch your spine in one direction for a certain pose, a counter pose follows to stretch it in the opposite direction, hence returning it to its normal position.

Twists

In these poses, you twist and release your body repeatedly. It helps strengthen your back and abdominal muscles and improve your circulation. These poses also have a huge impact on internal organs and they get cleansed and detoxified as fresh blood keeps getting pumped in and out of them.

Balancing Poses

These Yoga poses are great to center your body and provide it with good balance. These poses also require a steady mind, so they help you to be quiet and center your mind as well.

Forward Bends

Forward bends are great for exercising the entire back as well as strengthening the legs. They also help release tension in the muscles.

Backward Bends

Although they are the toughest amongst all Yoga asanas, these poses strengthen your back and legs and also make your spine extremely supple and flexible.
