Yoga For Weight Loss- Does it Actually Work?

Body, Fitness, Style | November 12th, 2009 No comments

It is well established fact that practicing Yoga on a regular basis can have immense benefits on your physical, mental and emotional health. It is also well known that Yoga is used as an alternative form of treatment for many ailments including high blood pressure, asthma, arthritis, anxiety, depression, etc. But, quite apart from its physical, psychological and spiritual benefits, does Yoga for weight loss actually work?

As a matter of fact, any physical activity will burn calories and this is true of Yoga as well. By the same token, there are a number of types of Yoga techniques, especially meditative Yoga techniques where you don’t have to move a muscle and these techniques won’t help you lose any weight whatsoever. However, Yoga has a large number of different techniques in its toolkit that can be effectively used to lose weight and to maintain the weight loss. Of course, you will have to choose the type of Yoga exercises carefully.

Amongst all the different types of Yoga, some of the most physically challenging styles are Ashtanga Yoga, Bikhram Yoga and Power Yoga. But, no matter how badly you want to lose weight, if you have never tried Yoga before, it is never a good idea to start with one of these advanced types of Yoga styles. Start with a Yoga fitness regime that is more suited to a beginner. This will help make your body supple and flexible and ready to try out the more complex poses of Yoga. The best style of Yoga to begin your Yoga exercises is Hatha Yoga. And the most physically strenuous Yoga fitness regime is Power Yoga, which also provides a complete cardio-vascular workout. Apart from these, there are many innovative styles like Hot Yoga wherein Yoga exercises are conducted in a hot room to enable excessive sweating.

While these styles of Yoga will help you burn your calories, there are other ways in which Yoga aids and maintains weight loss. The stretching exercises will help increase your metabolic rate which will help your body burn fat faster. The breathing exercises will help cleanse and detoxify your internal organs so that they function at their optimum, processing food more efficiently and not allowing it to get converted into fat. Meditation will help you exert control over your mind, which will help tremendously with dealing with hunger pangs and food cravings. As your mind becomes more alert and focused, you will be able to concentrate on the task at hand and not be distracted by the desire to eat high calorie food.

However, just practicing Yoga will not make you slimmer overnight. Just like any other weight loss regime, Yoga has to be complemented with healthy eating, adequate sleep, physical activity, mental exertion as well as will and determination to be effective. In the absence of these factors, no matter which fitness regime you adopt, even Yoga, will not be effective in your goal of weight loss.
