Yoga for Beginners: Things to keep In Mind

Healing, Health & Wellness, Yoga | December 12th, 2009 1 Comment

As more and more benefits of Yoga practice are coming to light, more and more people around the world are getting attracted to yoga practice. It is hardly surprising considering how yoga works to make your body healthier, your mind stronger and your spirit more alive. Yoga works on creating equilibrium between the body, mind and spirit of the practitioner. This then allows the practitioner to experience spiritual oneness with the universe. However, before spiritual awakening, it is very important to ensure that your body and mind are thoroughly prepared – that no ailment resides in your body and no distraction in your mind. If you are on a quest to attain spiritual enlightenment, and you want to begin yoga practice to help you towards it, yoga for beginners is a great place to start. Here are some things you need to keep in mind.

Firstly, it is important to know that there are many different styles of yoga. Kundalini yoga, bikram yoga, ashtanga yoga, yin yoga and vinyasa yoga are just some examples. The reason for this is that Yoga Is highly adaptable to the specific needs and requirements of the practitioners. In fact, that is one of the secrets of its survival for over 5000 years. As yoga became more and more accessible, more and more styles emerged to address specific needs. Fr instance, there is yoga for seniors that takes into account the frailness of age and body and there is yoga for kids that takes into account short attention spans and high excitability. It is important for you to choose the style of yoga that is right for you.

Hatha yoga is a basic collection of yoga poses and yoga breathing techniques that are simple and well suited for the beginner. The poses do not require extraordinary flexibility. On the contrary, they help make the body more flexible in preparation for more advanced levels of yoga. Even the breathing techniques are of introductory level and you begin to get a sense of how much breathing can impact your well being. Once you have mastered Hatha Yoga, you can then feel free to experiment with other styles of yoga.

Secondly, it is crucial that you learn yoga from a qualified and certified yoga instructor. Anyone who knows yoga can teach yoga, but it is highly recommended that you avoid any instructor that is not accredited. This is because teaching yoga not only involves knowing yoga, it also involves having knowledge of the human anatomy, insight into the philosophy of yoga and having teacher training in yoga as well. Thankfully, there is a global accreditation body for yoga professionals called Yoga Alliance. What you need to do is ensure that the instructor you are choosing to learn yoga from has accreditation from Yoga Alliance.

There is no substitute to self learning. You are highly advised to read books on yoga to understand the history and philosophy of yoga. This is sure to deepen your understanding and it will also ensure that you get the maximum benefit from yoga practice.
