Yoga Basics, An Overview for Beginning Yoga
Yoga is an eastern philosophy and way of life that emphasizes on the harmony of the body, the mind and the soul. Even though Yoga originated over 5000 years ago in the Indus Valley Civilization, it has been introduced to the West only about 50 years ago. However, in the recent years, the trend of practicing Yoga for physical and mental health and well being has become extremely popular in the West. More and more people are joining Yoga classes or learning Yoga basics at home with the help of Yoga DVDs. If you want to learn Yoga as well, there are many ways in which you can approach it.
To begin with, you need to know that Yoga has many different styles. Yoga is a philosophy that can be interpreted in many different ways. It is this adaptability of Yoga that has enabled it to survive 5 millenniums. That is why you see many different types of yoga available today to meet the specific requirements of the audience. For instance, you can do power Yoga to lose weight and get cardio-vascular workout and you can do meditative Yoga to help deal with stress and anxiety. So, find out if you want to try out any specific style of yoga. However, it is highly recommended that if you have never before done Yoga in your life, then you start with some Yoga Basics before trying out more complex styles. There are two main reasons for this- your body may not yet be ready to do complex styles of Yoga, and you may get discouraged and quit Yoga altogether if you cannot perform your Yoga asana correctly.
The next important thing to decide is whether you want to attend a Yoga workshop or you want to learn Yoga at home, using DVDs. While both are perfectly acceptable ways of learning Yoga, it is highly recommended that you start with attending a Yoga workshop and learning Yoga from a trained and certified Yoga instructor. The instructor will be able to give you a lot of background information on the philosophy behind each pose and the benefits it provides to your body. You can also have all your questions about any Yoga asana from your instructor. More importantly, you will have the benefit of supervision to ensure that you are holding your Yoga poses correctly. Incorrect poses can do more damage to the body than good.
On the other hand, you can learn Yoga in the privacy of your own home if you want to learn it from DVDs. You can also pause to check out a pose more closely repeat it endlessly until you get it right. Your yoga session at home also does not have to be time bound, as a Yoga workshop will invariably be.
It is important that you make choices that work in your favor. Yoga can provide a lot of benefits for your body, mind and soul. But, it is up to you to ensure that you get those benefits by practicing Yoga regularly.
