Wine Tasting Glasses

Wine | November 9th, 2009 No comments

When it comes to picking good glasses for your wine tasting it is just as important as picking the wines themselves. Having a poor wine glass can annihilate your ability to properly evaluate a fine wine while having a proper glass can wholly emphasize all of the qualities of the wine.

When you’re having a wine tasting it is completely unrealistic to have every single wine glass to every single style of wine. There are some that you can specifically focus on though and we’ll discuss some of the qualities and appropriate size for the glasses so you can come out as good as possible without having to spend a fortune.

Qualities of a Good Wine Tasting Glass

When it comes to the traditional wine tasting glass you’re looking at one that will get a good serving size while still only filling about ¼ of the glass itself. The reason for this is you want them to have enough of a portion to drink and fully appreciate the wine; however, while still allowing enough room for air and the wine to be swirled. To get this the traditional glass is going to have a bowl that will allow for these good sized pours while still allowing for the features described above.

To get a good wine tasting glass you’re going to want to make sure that it is:

  • Clear
  • No patterns
  • No etchings
  • Smooth edge that you can sip from

There are some ornamental glasses that are wholly inappropriate when it comes to wine tasting. A lot of these glasses are going to have a markedly rolled edge that won’t allow for the suitable tasting. The problem is that the aroma gets lost in glasses like this and if you try to swirl the wine you’re going to spill it all over.

You Can Ask Your Guests to Bring Wine Tasting Glasses

You’re your wine tasting is a casual thing among friends than you could feel comfortable asking them to bring their own glasses for the tasting. If you’re having a lot of guests over there are no problems asking them to bring their own glasses as most people aren’t going to have the dozens of glasses needed to have a wine tasting in their own home. All of the glasses may not go together but it doesn’t really matter as it’s just a casual get together.

Consider Renting

Should you not have enough good wine glasses and do not want to buy them as you’re not sure how much use you’ll actually be able to get you should consider renting glasses. You should check with some party rental companies as a lot of them will rent trays of wine glasses.

When you’re doing this you’re going to want to make sure to look and/or ask to make sure that the types they have for you are going to be adequate for your tasting. Additionally, you could also call some of the wine shops that are in your area and see if they do wine glass rentals as well.
