Wine and Cheese Baskets

Wine | November 6th, 2009 No comments

Creating a wine and cheese basket to take to your next party or event is a wonderful addition to any party or to even give as a gift to someone. It’s a great way to put together something for a wine and cheese party or to throw an informal gathering of friends in your backyard or garden to spend time with family or friends.

Putting together a wine and cheese basket takes little to no time since there is hardly any preparation involved. You can buy one already made but it’s a lot more budget friendly and personalized if you just do it yourself should you have the time.

Choose the Wine

You’ll first want to figure out the wine you’re going to use at the center of the basket as this is what you’ll base everything off of and with. Depending on how many people there will be or if you’re giving it as a gift you’ll want to choose either just a white or a red wine or both. You’ll want to usually cap it at 3-4 bottle maximum if giving it as a gift.

Getting a Basket

By simply going to your local craft store you can pick out a nice basket that will work perfectly. Make sure you pick one that is weaved well enough to hold the weight of both the wine and the cheese you’re going to be putting into it. It’s best advised that you go with a wooden basket as it’s going to provide you with a very solid bottom. The last thing you’re going to want is to be carrying it and the bottom to fall out.

If you’re putting it together for a special occasion or a holiday you can add a personal touch by making sure to pick out a color to fit the season, occasion or holiday. You can also choose the same colors to fill the basket or have the colors with a plain basket, whatever fits your desires, and there really is no wrong way to go about it.

Filling the Basket

You’ll want to next visit your local grocery store or deli and get the cheese that you’ll want to pair with the wine you’re buying. It’s usually a good idea to get a large variety of cheeses; including:

  • Swiss
  • Cheddar
  • Smoked
  • Gorgonzola

When you’re at the store getting the cheeses make sure you don’t forget to pick everything else up as well. You’re going to want to get the cheese crackers as well as some of the following garnishes as well:

  • Olives
  • Pickles
  • Canned Oysters

You could also even include some fruit in the basket assuming you’re putting it together fairly soon to the date you’re gifting it or going to the party.

Creating the Basket

You’ll want to start with the filling. After you put in the filling you’ll then want to put the wine bottles in, followed by the cheese and then the garnishes. If you wish to you can add some extra decoration with some glitter or some ribbons. Make sure you include a cheese knife even if there is no other accessories you put in there.

Finish the basket off with some cellophane to wrap it up making sure to cut a piece that will be large enough to fit around the entire basket and still leave enough room for a 5” frill above the basket to tie it off with a ribbon.

This is fairly simple and easy to do and will definitely be a hit for a gift or for the next wine and cheese party.
