Health News That Isn’t News: The Blatantly Obvious Effect of Watching TV While Eating
THIS JUST IN: Kids shouldn’t eat in front of the TV!
How is this new and revolutionary knowledge? It’s on par with the breaking news story I just saw claiming that adolescent girls are 47% less satisfied with their bodies after looking at fashion magazines. You don’t say! (And the meteorologists have also concluded that winter is, in fact, colder than summer in the northern hemisphere. Hang on! Let me make some calls, this is big stuff!)
I get a little high-strung when I see “news” stories like this. Allow me to indulge in what I call…
The Blatantly Obvious:
Eating while watching television overrides our ability to know when to stop eating because you’re focused on what you’re watching and not on what you’re eating. Duh. Haven’t we all roared through a silo of popcorn at the movies without even realizing it? That’s why they sell food at the movies. Nobody goes to the movies to eat. That’s what restaurants are for. And the presence of big screens in some restaurants just goes to show that if it’s going to make you eat more, (and therefore spend more) then management will go for it.
So in my continuing series of Body + Wellness, I’ve shared a few tips. And now there’s one more.
Body + Wellness Tips:
- Eat together. If you live on your own, eat mindfully.
- Don’t eat any refined sugar.
- Make dinner your smallest meal of the day.
