Which Fitness Program Works Best For You?

Fitness | November 21st, 2009

Most people agree that fitness and health are important for a positive and productive experience of life. However, how to reach this fitness level is an opinion that differs from person to person. The fact is that there are literally hundreds of fitness programs out there which promise to promote good health, help you lose weight and ensure that you are absolutely fit and healthy. For somebody who wants to start fitness training for the first time in their lives, it can be a daunting task to choose any one fitness program for their requirements. Here are some tips on how you can narrow down your choices and decide which fitness program works for you the best.

  • The most important thing to do first is to consult your doctor and assess your current levels of body fitness. Ask your physician for his advice on what fitness program you should pursue given your levels of fitness. More importantly, find out if there are any specific fitness programs that you should avoid given your current state of health. You want to ensure that your choice of fitness program does not put any unnecessary strain on your body and affect your health adversely.
  • Secondly, identify what your personal fitness goals are. Do you want to shed those few extra pounds? Do you want to deal with a health condition? Are you preparing for a fitness event like a marathon? Do you just want to be fitter and healthier? Depending on what your personal goals are, you will be able to narrow down your choices to a few viable fitness training programs.
  • Think about which fitness training program you would enjoy the most. Are you someone who would prefer the physical workout provided by aerobics or are you someone who prefers the soft graceful movements of Pilates? Is Power Yoga which provides a great cardiovascular workout right for you or is Asstanga Yoga which is a more holistic approach to physical, mental and spiritual health right for you? The reason it is important to go with what you like is that you need to feel motivated enough to go through your fitness training day after day, or week after week. If you do not enjoy your fitness training, you are not likely to continue with it after a time.
  • Consider your age before choosing a fitness program. While all fitness programs can theoretically be done by anyone of any age, some are more suitable for certain age groups than others. For instance, weight training is most suitable for the 25-35 age group, whereas aerobics is highly recommended to older people. Some training programs like Yoga, however, are absolutely suitable for any age group.
  • Consider the financial implications before choosing your fitness training program. While some training programs may require you to spend quite a large sum, for instance, fitness club memberships, some others may be relatively cheaper, for instance, yoga. Of course, you may also choose to maintain or regain body fitness by doing activities like walking, jogging, cycling, etc. that do not require you to spend a penny.
