What’s on your must-have list for fall fashion?
Daily | September 23rd, 2008
This season is the reason…for serious wardrobe planning.

Carrie says: Boots! Leather, knee high, don’t-care-how-much-they-cost boots. A plaid cape. Petit Bateau navy stripped t-shirt. Vintage floral dress. Foley and Corrina bag.

Danielle says: Luchesse cowboy boots with the high heel. Really wide leg jeans. A good sewer who can do up some simple tunic topics for me. And…regular massages so I feel great in my clothes.

A taupe satin trench coat. A clingy soft peach scarf. The perfect vegan black pumps. The right shade of blush.
September 23rd, 2008 at 1:16 am
Great dresses teamed with long wool cardigans and gret leather boots:) plus a thick 70s belt to get the hole thong together! And about as much lattes as I can get through the season, please! And I wouldn`t mind a glass of chardonnay either.
September 23rd, 2008 at 1:44 am
Yes, great wide-leg jeans and new boots, flat ones and a great new purse.I’d like to need the beautiful clothes that are coming out now, but I don’t. What I always wish for every fall is a beautiful, chic,
Burberry raincoat.
September 23rd, 2008 at 2:21 am
Yep, leather, knee-high, care-a-little-how-much-they-cost boots. And a rockin’ wide belt to wear with simple little dresses. I love fall!
September 23rd, 2008 at 2:26 am
I heart clothes so I usually make a list every season. (I also like to look at NEXT season’s clothes at the same time, via the runway coverage on style.com.) This season the list is: leather messenger bag, boyfriend jeans, flat boots, patterned full knee-length skirt, skinny cardi, skinny belt, lightweight plaid scarf. Got the jeans (Levi’s 501s; the cool Parisian girls are wearing them!), boots and scarf already. It’s also time to start checking thrift and vintage stores for a big, long, eighties-style blazer, possibly with gold buttons, possibly double-breasted. (see http://www.style.com/fashionshows/review/S2009RTW-BOUT/ for inspiration!!)
September 23rd, 2008 at 3:30 am
I have been looking for a vintage style long, warm and cozy fall coat. Something really cool, that doesn’t look too vintagey. I bought a beautiful vintage vest, and I love this era of style. I just hope I find it before winter sets in, which seems to be close here in the northeast.
September 23rd, 2008 at 3:32 am
hi there, I want to know what the simple tunics look like? I am looking for a simple tunic pattern.
thanks pamela
September 23rd, 2008 at 4:55 am
Tights with high heels! Makes your legs look great, hides the spider veins, and you can get away with a shorter hemline. There is no flashing when getting out of a car…and hey, they’re warm!
September 23rd, 2008 at 5:09 am
New pair of boots, losing another ten pounds, and winter work jacket.
September 23rd, 2008 at 5:10 am
wrap dresses, bell bottoms, and big tribal earrings
September 23rd, 2008 at 5:38 am
I just got it last week! A GORGEOUS Marc Jacobs handbag! Her name is Ruby…
September 23rd, 2008 at 5:39 am
Ankle boots! Not usually my thing but I am craving them this year. Also, if I can dream, Joanie’s wardrobe from MAD MEN.Danielle, if you want tunics that really fit, sew your own. Sewing is wonderfully meditative and tunics are a relatively easy starter project.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:21 am
Pale yellow cashmere.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:24 am
Black wool wide-leg pants, new jeans, a cute little jacket or sweater from Anthropologie…and better posture.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:45 am
I’ve already armed myself with slouchy suede boots with buckles, and a pair of leather boots from Fornarina. I’m breaking out all my raw silk scarves from Thailand too. Colorful accessories with purples, browns and my fail-safe: black!!!!
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:45 am
ooh, carrie – a plaid cape… APC has an amazing one that I have been lusting after – a bit out of my price range, though. in the realm of the possible: black suede kneehigh boots, flat or low heeled. a full kneelength patterned skirt. a couple of lightweight cotton scarves. something in buffalo plaid. a red suede bag. a cream knit hat. things to try – not sure how they’ll work on me: a vest, and ankle boots.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:46 am
LOL! That is soooo cute! Love the name!! Thanks for posting, you made my morning! Cheers!
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:50 am
I am the WRONG person to ask this question! I love clothes and stuff! Anything in a rich purple hue. Patterned tights. Satin tulip skirt with a high waist/bow. Any BCBGMaxAzria dress. A funky Kenneth Jay Lane bold floral necklace. Those black, patent leather knee boots that I saw in White House/Black Market. What would top it off is if I could get a new LV Mahina XL in black patent. Oh. . .the list could go on and on. . .
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:57 am
Ya! Danielle “sew your own”. Sewing and cooking are in your genes dig girl it’s there.love ya.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:06 am
Black tights and white shirts – sounds like my usual fall shopping list…….. Pencil skirts (bought 2 already – yes, both in black). Really big red patent handbag.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:10 am
I just bought new Levi’s and a casual LL Bean barn coat (light blue with brown collar). I really want a new handbag….maybe tote size. As much as I’d like to carry a tiny bag, I have so much stuff!
And some soft fleece tops and turtlenecks.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:15 am
Ooooohhhh – so many great must-haves! I’d like a pair of perfect semi-flat, knee high leather boots – kind of like a cross between a pair of Fryes, but with some nice equestrian hardware – sturdy and chic. And I’ve already been investing in some knits – a great longer, chunky sweater-cardi with a shawl collar. And some scarves – long and skinny and pashmina style…
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:32 am
Peep-toe booties! If you want to go to Fashion at the Park in Dallas, TX to see all the latest fall must-haves go to hitherandyonder.com to enter to win tickets to a runway show.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:36 am
All I have to say is YOU NAILED IT! You guys picked both of my faves – Boots! There is nothing like a pair of Lucchese boots. I have to admit I haven’t tried the high heel style; however, EVERY woman should own a pair in their lifetime.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:40 am
Oh, I love Joannie’s wardrobe on Mad Men too (I am so glad that won an Emmy -it means they will be around longer)! I think I have most of the things I really wanted – long sweater cardigan in tan, wide leg jeans, ankle boots, and few sweaters/cardigans that go with everything. Oh, and I just cut my hair short – looks Halle Berryish – loving it; I have gotten a lot of compliments about it too.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:52 am
I like your style Laurel!
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:57 am
Love APC.
I am thinking of sewing a cape nice and easy, New Look Patterns are cheap chic.

September 23rd, 2008 at 7:58 am
I’m a geek. My closets are full. But I must have a new HD Radio (twice the channels for more content diversity) with the new click-to-buy feature so I can, with one click, buy new songs I hear for my iTunes library. The click-to-buy announcement just came out so I’m guessing new radios will be available by holiday.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:59 am
Biker boots and an Hermes scarf.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:11 am
I really just vowed to take more time with fashion. I tend to have a very either/or closet with my “effort clothes” and “utilitarian clothes”. Some of the utilitarian clothes are cute, but it’s a very jeans and tops no-nonsense approach and I really want to make more of a effort to find the balance between looking good and being comfortable, and polishing up a bit more in the day-to-day.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:12 am
I already got it!!
I found a Marc Jacobs purse at a Barney’s outlet the other day and fell in love. I feel borderline ridiculous saying this… but it just puts a huge smile on my face everytime I look at it. Said smile will likely disappear when the credit card bill comes in…. but saving money wasn’t the point now was it?
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:14 am
A slimmer, tighter body (getting there) / something plaid / a vest / something with lace / riding boots to go with my RL linen jodhpurs and 2 more inches in height, that doesn’t involve foot wear – can anyone help with that?
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:16 am
just a heads up in case it matters and you didn’t know, but Burberry is on Peta’s list of companies to boycot for their use of fur
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:18 am
Yummy…
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:23 am
I just saw the Burberry Prorsum spring 2009 show online (http://www.style.com/fashionshows/review/S2009RTW-BURBERRY/) and think a vintage coat is a great idea — something brocade-y and late fifties/ early sixties in feeling. Maybe try eBay?
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:28 am
I love Frye boots; they last forever. What about this style?? http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/33152014/c/325.html
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:28 am
It’s always a fab pair of boots for fall and clothing in deep earth tones. Gotta love it.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:34 am
so…Sacred. Sacreds unite. This list could be mine.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:35 am
I completely forgot about the grey, flannel high rise, wide legged pants I intend to find that are meant to go with the most fabulous bag I just got and hold onto your selves – it’s a diaper bag. Have a look at it here and then see if you can find a retailer near you. http://www.shopgenes.com/scout-felt.html
I found mine at the coolest baby store on Avenue Rd. in Toronto called ‘Lil Niblets and Baby Sprouts’ – they ordered it for me and went and picked it up. It’s filled with the neatest things, meant for storage of things like wipes and change pads, but I’m ‘re-purposing’ them. I’m using it for my business and it’s perfect to carry my laptop, camera and notebooks, etc.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:16 am
Hey me too! I wonder if Ruby and my new baby are from the same family?? I still need to name her. I just keep calling her my love. Ha!!!
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:19 am
midlength wool knit sweater and tall, flat boots both in a shade of brown/ tan. And I wouldn’t mind a tartan jacket, but that may be pushing the budget.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:24 am
yes.. boots.. and I just bought cashmere wraps.. for the fall.. they go with everything.. mmmmmmmmmmmm warm.. and functional..
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:33 am
cardigans, cardigans, and more cardigans.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:40 am
I’ll go with boots as well, long comfy skirts, maybe a vest or two, and I really need to finish making my mitten-things for when it starts to get chilly.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:42 am
Can’t guarantee 2 inches, but what’s called the 5 seconds 5 pound weight loss – standing tall! POsture exercises incorporated into your fitness plan (pilates will do)
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:58 am
I was crazy excited when tights came back! They’re so fantastic!
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:25 am
Always a white fitted tailored shirt and this year a 1950ish pencil skirt. Fun stylish and sexy!
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:34 am
Warm, waterproof boots – for rainy Vancouver weather!
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:35 am
some funky colored cords — and they will be so loved and lived in all fall and winter and spring.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:52 am
Cashmere leggings (to be worn with tall muklucks and short sweater dress), another sweater dress or 2 made with organic wool in sapphire blue and/or emerald green, Loyale’s fantastic craft fur jacket, and a pair of pants that actually look good on my curvy, petite body in a classic style using sustainable material.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:56 am
Know what you mean about a big, long 80 styles blazer. Today (it’s cool in Calgary) I’m wearing a long blazer from the 90’s, more fitted and sans the 80’s big shoulders. I’ve kept in my closet for a few years waiting for it to come back in style. It hasn’t, according to what I see in the stores, but I’m done with short, cropped jackets — no warmth, no coziness. (and no, no, no to double breasted jackets, they look sloppy unbuttoned!)
September 23rd, 2008 at 11:01 am
Scarves! I love long yummy scarves in fabulous colors to tie, wrap, drape to spice up my outfit. My new long cashmere pashmina in grass green is dying to come out this season. I am all about the accessories, Duh, It’s what I do for a living, Now go “Pretty It Up!”
September 23rd, 2008 at 11:05 am
Our East Coast fall weather requires layering and clever strategies that guise as spontaneity! A woven wrap designed and made by one of my dearest friends would be ideal for dealing with fickle weather in style. I’m in the market for some new and updated jeans….a “just right” dress for most occasions…and a whole new stable of sweaters from Frenchies (Carrie you would love Frenchies!!!). I’m craving a vintage day in Halifax with daughter, Ally …a creative day of hunting, editing, and hopefully discovering something I wasn’t even expecting to find.
September 23rd, 2008 at 11:05 am
I love my comfy new faded organic cotton jeans with extra long leg and wide boot cut from Joe Fresh. Can’t find a leather or vinyl bag to suit my SS to save my life. Simple, natural, silver hardware. (Checked out Foley and Corrina but not for me) And I’m wearing my long single-breasted blazers from a few years ago ’cause I’m done with short cropped jackets that don’t keep your butt warm and lose their “statement” because something is always sticking out below.
And tunics (to wear over jeans and fitted skirts for me) are a brilliant idea, Danielle. They are hard to find. I’m looking for some that are lean, fitted and unembellished in fabulous fabrics and I just might make them myself.
September 23rd, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Blazers/Jackets in red, orange and brown….Boots for the snow!!! Yes, this is Chicago weather…it may snow. lol
September 23rd, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Thanks Laurel – I’ll check them out!
September 23rd, 2008 at 1:41 pm
I’m droolin like a hungry child at a candy store all these yummy postings Just make it more likely I will invade North America armed with my credit card and a list sometime
In the meantime it is spring here. A series of easy linen shirts with vetical detailing and turn up collars. Some Molly N heeeld sandals. scooped neck T shirts. a bangle of turquiose stones
Autumn 09 The only thing in my mind right now is I have found a dress maker who did sewing for Lord of the Rings and I am picturing a crushed velvet throw (Drama Drama)for evening dyed in a really flattering color that says Bold Grace is in town. Worn with some heeled Boots that make me 6ft tall. And my smoking Parisienne evening bag (for those fortunate enough to do Paris they’re exquisite transport you right to paradise carrying one. Brand is Le Prince du Sud Paris) I never had a little evening clutch before. I just know I will feel like a goddess in my throw.
September 23rd, 2008 at 2:02 pm
New boots: Pakerson; A new scarf (gun metal gray, angora) and tie it around my neck so it doesn’t get filed under the “lost”category; get my mom to knit me a few pairs of black wool socks; New jeans…maybe 3 – Sevens; A tattoo
September 23rd, 2008 at 2:07 pm
And is anyone boycotting the use of leather?
September 23rd, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Every year, I buy a new suit – I’ve already bought it and am having the alterations done – I pick up up from my tailor on Friday. Oh yes, I want to get a new pair of leather pants – my old ones are too big!
September 23rd, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Did the boots last year–now another great long skirt to wear with them.
September 23rd, 2008 at 2:19 pm
You can’t go too much by what you see in stores, I find. It’s better to go by what the stylistas are wearing on the streets — after all, that’s where the designers are getting a lot of *their* ideas! I just found this great site today
http://lookbook.nu/
with cool, individual looks from all over the world. Lots of bigger, longer blazers. And how cool is this girl?!?!?
http://lookbook.nu/look/20972-hazelnut?c=46
September 23rd, 2008 at 3:01 pm
yep, boots. I just got a beautiful green pair from el naturalista.
And I think this year I am finally going to design some core sexy staples and have them made. Layer friendly, flattering and funky short dresses to wear over pants, with shrugs and gypsy hoods in black, plum and avocado.
And my own knitted scarves.
September 23rd, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Equestrian leather boots with the zipper on the rear and double copper buckles. A cream & chocolate zebra coloured cashmere wrap. A made for me silk and linen dress in aquamarine. Sunburst gold earrings. A striking multi toned cashmere and silk knitted dress together with Armani leather belt. Perhaps a luxurious amethyst peace silk robe for evenings at home. And new Italian running shoes for those long exhilarating moments flying through the sky!
September 23rd, 2008 at 3:11 pm
i’m in love with cardigans all of a sudden, too!
September 23rd, 2008 at 3:18 pm
would love to hear more about your tattoo!
September 23rd, 2008 at 3:20 pm

AK, checked out Loyale’s web site, fabulous! Thanks. Where do you get your cashmere leggings?
September 23rd, 2008 at 5:36 pm
Joe Fresh is great for fun pieces and ditto on the short jackets, my butt was always cold.
September 23rd, 2008 at 5:36 pm
T_T Did I just find my wardrobe twin?
September 23rd, 2008 at 5:38 pm
That DRESS! It sounds divine. You simply must get it.
September 23rd, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Dang near everything! I got rid of most of my clothing before a move and now have an awful lot of nothing. I’m going to keep pruning and selling stuff and will hopefully be able to afford some great basics. I’m going with the French philosophy on style: buy great basics and mix and match! J.Crew’s a favorite of mine since it’s classic, in great fabrics and fun colors and has a tall line.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:00 pm
emily, please tell us the whole story. Of the Precious Ruby

September 23rd, 2008 at 9:48 pm
1. Winter boots – mine gave out last year and we’re supposed to get more snow this year than last year.
2. Bigger pants – nuf said.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Brora has gorgeous cashmere stuff including leggings

but the pound is so high against the dollar(s) right now . . . still, they have GREAT sales.
September 24th, 2008 at 2:45 am
Angela — you know what happens when you get bigger pants, right? Overnight all your healthy eating/ exercise efforts pay off and suddenly you lose five pounds, so the new pants are loose! (And no, there is no way to trick fate on this one!)
)
September 24th, 2008 at 2:46 am
Yaaaaaay!!! I’m so happy you like it!

Sexy sweaters.
Sweaters can be very sexy haha
Style that all works together – if I grab a shirt, a cardigan and some pants, it all seems to work no matter what – no “outfits.”
September 24th, 2008 at 7:09 am
