What do you do to promote your own happiness?

Q&A | July 8th, 2008 No comments

Happiness is most often a choice. And that ‘choice muscle’ is something we can strengthen with small, daily actions. And who better to know than The Happiness Project founder, Gretchen Rubin?! She’s just completed a memoir about the year she “spent test-driving every principle, tip, theory, and scientific study” on happiness. Today’s question comes from Gretchen.

Vancouver TrailsCarrie says: The most important happy choice I commit to everyday is exercising outside. When I am in nature moving & sweating I let go of my worries, feed my muscles and fit into my jeans. My other happiness choice is taking time to share a cup of Karryn’s earl grey tea!!!

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Stadium ArcadiumDanielle says: The most important, happy-choice I make EVERY day is snuggles with my boys. A day without devotional snuggles is a day without…devotional snuggles! Very loud funk on the drive to work also does wonders for my soul.

Gretchen says: My first priority toward happiness is to take care of my body. I work hard to get enough sleep (gosh, it’s hard to turn out the light—the time after the kids go to sleep is precious). I try to exercise most days. I’m careful not to let myself get too hungry. I bring a sweater everywhere, because I’m always cold. I always keep a bottle of Advil in my bag.

I’ve found that when I feel well-rested, energetic, and comfortable, I’m far more likely to undertake the activities that I know will make me happy. I’m polite when someone is rude to me in line at the drugstore. I take the time to email a friend. I set up a tea party with my daughters. I unload the dishwasher instead of waiting to see if my husband will unload it first. I push myself with my work.

I work on my happiness by trying to follow my happiness resolutions each day, and the better I feel physically, the more able I am to keep my resolutions.
