What is Holistic Healing?
Holistic healing refers to the idea of a holistic approach to life and living a harmonious lifestyle. There are various branches of medicine such as alternative medicine, complementary medicine and integrative medicine, which differ from holistic healing as physical health is not necessarily the main focus in holistic healing. However, many people who choose to take up holistic healing will have experienced physical discomfort or illness, which prompts them to do so.
Holistic medicine is not meant to be an alternative to conventional medical care. The therapy, called holistic or “wholistic”, focuses on all parts of the person’s character and personality. It is an ongoing journey of discovery of oneself as opposed to a one-time fix for an ailing person. The idea is to live better and healthier and to strive for wholeness in one’s life.
Holistic therapy is meant to be a lifestyle change and goes beyond the mind-body connection of maintaining one’s health. Overall health is valued, but all parts of a person’s life such as physical and mental health, emotional health and spiritual beliefs are considered. The holistic approach helps people attract their specific desires and helps them achieve their goals in life.
A person taking this approach will learn the importance of relationships and the environment, compassion and tolerance while striving to find wholeness within his life and within himself.
The kinds of holistic therapy available vary greatly and are extensive in nature. Some of them are: reiki, cell therapy, light therapy, meditation, oxygen therapy, colon therapy, energy medicine, yoga, aromatherapy, ayurveda medicine, natural diet, exercise, counselling, herbal remedies, homeopathy, acupuncture, naturopathic medicine, bodywork, energy-based therapies, prayerful intention and Chinese medicine.
Holistic medicine has been claimed to be used to heal chronic diseases by people all over the world. It has also been used to treat psychological disorders and childhood illnesses, to normalize weight, prevent disease and improve one’s overall health. It is said that the energy level increases with the practise of holistic therapy. Often, people claim to have transformed their outlook on life using holistic medicine.
A holistic healer is said to be the same as a medical professional, with each healer having his or her own speciality to offer. A healer understands that the discomfort in a body is due to the presence of some imbalance in the person’s life. This imbalance could be physical or mental, or the result of some emotional problems. It could also be the result of the spiritual needs not being satisfied. Additional issues such as abusing the body by improper diet, lack of sleep and so on are also addressed.
Holistic medicine is often used along with conventional medicine to treat patients with illnesses that are expected to cause emotional or stress-related problems. Various kinds of holistic methods may be used for treatment depending on the patient’s preference and spiritual tendencies. Holistic teachers often see themselves as people who empower their patients to lead healthier lives by emphasizing prevention as the best cure.
