What do you know the most about?
Daily | September 14th, 2008
From scholarly heights to obscure recipes, how-to’s and the depths of useless pop culture – we’ve all got some corner of the know-it-all market covered.

Carrie says: I know a lot about grace. In beauty of form, forgiveness, moral strength and willingly working. Also, we say grace every evening!

Danielle says: I know a lot about almost every side of the publishing industry. I also know more than the average bear about the virtues of beeswax candles, attachment parenting and Steve Winwood (long story).Don’t forget to read today’s blog: Thank You Speech.

Apologies for the minor glitch with the email this morning. Everything now seems to be working.
September 15th, 2008 at 3:34 am
For about 45 years I have had an interest and have read almost continuously in the area of human development and spirituality. This has been most useful to me in the past 5 years working in a hospice as a nurse.
In my twenties and thirties it was mostly a “selfish” interest but now life experience and knowledge are married into wisdom. The miricale of alchemy at work.
I am fairly good at beauty making in my home too.
September 15th, 2008 at 3:54 am
Food. Movies.
Repeat.
September 15th, 2008 at 3:55 am
I know far too much about navigating European airports and discount airlines, and could plan a European holiday for any tastes. Otherwise I’m full of basically useless information that comes in handy at pub quizzes and at dinner parties.
September 15th, 2008 at 4:17 am
I know an obscene amount of pop culture. I’m the one friends ask for updates haha! I also have a pretty good wealth of knowledge about upcoming trends.
On a more spiritual/emotional wellbeing side – I know a lot about forgiving myself, and learning to be authentically myself. I struggle so much with trying to be perfect sometimes, or being upset because I AM upset (whether for a legitimate reason or not), that I’ve been trying to read up on being okay with all those warts of mine.
September 15th, 2008 at 4:27 am
I know far too much about pop culture. I endlessly frustrate myself by not retaining important information but having perfect recall of all of the names of Brangelina’s children…
But my specialist subject would be using art and creativity as a force for change. While there’s always more to learn, I’ve finally got to a point where I can come into work and not feel like I’m going to be ‘found out’ as a fraud, so I guess that means I know my stuff.
September 15th, 2008 at 4:36 am
I know an awful lot about human nature, not from any scholarly studies but because I spent a good part of my adult life working as a nanny and in retail, both of which depend on “reading” people. Other than that, sewing, fashion, food, what’s sexy -not necessarily in that order!
September 15th, 2008 at 4:50 am
Energy is my forté. I can see it, feel it, touch it, mold it, create it, describe it, move it around, play with it.
September 15th, 2008 at 5:12 am
It may not be the most important thing in the world, but I know too much about fashion. It has been a hobby of mine since I was a very little girl. I know all the tricks and secrets to looking as nice as possible in clothing. What styles are slimming? What styles are conservative? What styles are chic? What styles are casual? Etc. It is kind of ridiculous, because I honestly think I have read every fashion related history book ever printed! LOL! Oh well, guess we all have to know something.
September 15th, 2008 at 5:13 am
LOL! I forget the important things too! But I can talk forever about clothing!
September 15th, 2008 at 5:19 am
I wish I were possible to ask you questions, Jennifer.
September 15th, 2008 at 5:22 am
I forgot half of conversations. The beginning, end or middle jokes, important dates and even the times my children were born but do I forget anything about movies, actors, directors – even movies I HAVEN’T seen? Oh, no – that s*** I remember FOREVER. What IS that about?
September 15th, 2008 at 5:23 am
Whoa! Does that ever sound wonderful. Is it?
September 15th, 2008 at 5:26 am
I know the most about trivia! Then I know a great deal about sexual abuse, both personally and professionally. I also know a lot about death, dying, grief, bereavement, addiction, recovery, and other stuff I’ve forgotten!
September 15th, 2008 at 5:49 am
I know a lot about fashion, style and expressing yourself in a way that reflects your true essence.
September 15th, 2008 at 5:56 am
Ancient Egypt — ancient cultures in general, but a LOT about Egypt. Nutrition. Narcissism. And more Egypt … ; ) And ask me about the BARF (Bones-And-Raw-Food) program for your pet — can go on for days!
September 15th, 2008 at 6:02 am
Words. As a court reporter for 30 years, sometimes I was charged with the responsibility of transcribing words mumbled, mumbled from foreign languages, or a purely mumbled made-up word, such as, “How did you configurate that graph?”
I seem to have an innate knowledge of teaching odd dogs tricks, too: Both dogs wipe their feet on the outdoor rug like bulls ready to charge the matador, and the little chihuahua does his business in a litter box. LOL.
September 15th, 2008 at 6:10 am
Hmmm….good question. Of the things I know a lot about, I’m honestly not sure what I know the MOST about. But I WANT to know the most about maximizing my time and skill for writing.
September 15th, 2008 at 6:26 am
I know a lot about mindfulness meditation, writing and creativity. Now if I would only PRACTICE!
September 15th, 2008 at 6:26 am
I know a lot about self-knowledge, movies, and spirituality. I am extremely introspective, which is both a blessing and a struggle at times. I love spending time alone, but I also would like to have intimacy with a few key people.
September 15th, 2008 at 6:34 am
I feel like a know a bit about a lot, and am wondering about the overall theme of the things I do know. It seems like everything I know a bit about somehow is connected to improving, restoring or streamlining a given situation.
September 15th, 2008 at 6:35 am
I know a lot about art, aesthetics, beauty and form. That is my passion. My other passion is humans and I know a lot about them, too;) Art and humanity walk hand in hand. The greatest pisces of art touch our commonness, that we are all humans and alike. There is no greater, there is no smaller, just equality!
September 15th, 2008 at 6:37 am
I know how receiving an unexpected card can brighten a day, touch a heart or even change a life. I love to think about the joy that I spread every day as I send cards to the people in my life.
September 15th, 2008 at 6:55 am
I’m with you, Joannie – my head is full of trivia of all kinds. I also know a lot about sexual abuse and Dissociative Identity Disorder.
September 15th, 2008 at 6:56 am
Your ’style statement’ name seems perfectly chosen…
September 15th, 2008 at 7:01 am
I know people best, I suppose. As a writer and story-teller, I like to watch and wonder. My husband watches me watching sometimes and when I catch his eye, he just smiles knowingly. But, maybe I know almost as much about creating beauty, especially in my home and now maybe others homes?? My website (first page) is ‘live.’ Yaaay me!
September 15th, 2008 at 7:18 am
Cultural landscape preservation, pop culture, tennis, the Red Sox, and photography. What a crazy group of things!
September 15th, 2008 at 7:25 am
I know a lot about Social graces. raising my childeren. Taking care of myself. experimental cooking. reading my husbands mind before he evens has a thought in it.
September 15th, 2008 at 7:34 am
At first my answer was going to be food, cooking, and fiction, but when I read through the other answers I realized that I, too, know WAY too much about pop culture, shoes, movies, and fashion. I know more than most of my age-group about computers. On a more worthwhile note, I know a lot about non-profit grantsmanship.
September 15th, 2008 at 7:34 am
Transformation of pain and suffering. It seems my life and work has offered the experience to repeatedly sink into the depths of pain and suffering so that I could repeatedly practice the tools of awareness, detachment, and total love and acceptance.
Despite 8 years of study of psychology, and years as a therapist and facilitator, I really began to learn after studying with mystic Mada Dalian. I repeatedly witnessed; connection and wholeness is always resting inside, waiting for my time and attention. Everything moves around the still center. Nothing to do but cultivate the observer and the ego drops.
Thanks Mada. Bless you.
September 15th, 2008 at 7:36 am
I am going to have to say once again, Books. mostly fiction. I do have a few favorite authors and read a lot of suspense and do like certain series. I am always looking for some books to complete certain series that I read.
September 15th, 2008 at 7:38 am
First of all, I bow down in respect to the hospice nurse.
Secondly, I know a lot about food, cooking, and movies. I have also acquired a bit of knowledge raising two daughters!
September 15th, 2008 at 7:43 am
That sounds like an invitation! (to plan a trip for someone)
September 15th, 2008 at 7:45 am
I do that, too. I dont’ send cards every day, but I send cards monthly.
September 15th, 2008 at 7:48 am
I know a lot about the library. I go a lot, and I can find a book very easily. Dorky but true!
September 15th, 2008 at 7:52 am
I know a lot about the human Liver. My husband had a liver transplant & I now work with other pre and post transplant patients. Mostly we just talk & I learn more about that amazing organ each day. I also know a lot about cleaning products (what works and what doesn’t) and how to paint a room and what products work and don’t. I’m sure there’s more, but this is a good list.
September 15th, 2008 at 8:20 am
Jesus. African Americans. Urban youth. Positive Psychology.
September 15th, 2008 at 8:21 am
Oh and EMPATHY!!! (Being in other people’s shoes…understanding how others’ feel)
September 15th, 2008 at 8:23 am
I know a lot about listening. Along with that come the natural extensions of compassion, empathy, and comforting.
September 15th, 2008 at 8:23 am
I know a lot about publishing and content development. I’ve worked in TV, developed scripts, and been an editor for six years. I dream in editorial.
September 15th, 2008 at 8:26 am
I know a lot about fashion and pop culture and southern german cuisine.
September 15th, 2008 at 8:26 am
I am the same way – have lots of interests and read about different areas but I can’t say that I’m an expert. Did you find the book helped you to see the connection of your interests? I think that this has been the most amazing website/book for realizing that my interests have a theme to them as well and it was the basis for finding my first word.
September 15th, 2008 at 8:28 am
How we feel and look matters! All the best with your book launch Nancy!
September 15th, 2008 at 8:31 am
Daily cards how lovely Debbie. We love giving cards here at C&D, a weekly ritual
September 15th, 2008 at 8:39 am
Having worked in the travel industry for more than 30 years, I am an expert on why people should book through a real travel agent instead of thinking they can do it on-line or have a friend do it for them.
September 15th, 2008 at 9:28 am
I know too much about bilingualism, especially in children, for someone who is neither parent nor researcher. I am in danger of launching into the topic at the slightest provocation, if anyone should happen to mention grade-school immersion programs or dare to complain of immigrants’ lack of English skills. It’s embarrassing, really.
September 15th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Careful, you might get a lot of requests for help!
September 15th, 2008 at 9:40 am
I’m not really an expert in anything. I’m a true dilettante – I know a little about about many, many things. I used to hate that about myself, but I’ve come to embrace my broad interests. I can have a decent conversation with almost anyone. As for the things I know most about… hmmm… travel planning, cooking, science fiction, New York City, photography, street fashion, Boston Terriers, spelling…
September 15th, 2008 at 10:08 am
I know a lot about…
the cosmetics industry
baking
gracious entertaining
words
science
p.s. I found my Style Statement this weekend!
September 15th, 2008 at 10:59 am
hand-drumming, unleashing creativity (in art and music), Microsoft PowerPoint, writing, graphic design/layout/typography, e-communications, taking pictures that make people look good (everyone posts pictures i’ve taken of them on their sites, like facebook… now if only i could get a photo credit LOL)
September 15th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Having worked in deadline environments for most of my career, I know a lot about getting things done by deadline even when it seems impossible…like today!
September 15th, 2008 at 11:24 am
so…what is it?
xo

September 15th, 2008 at 11:25 am
I know alot about positive communication: How to frame any comment, question or suggestion using positive language. I presented on this topic a few years ago from coast to coast. Everything can be communicated in a positive, friendly, inviting way, if we so choose. That’s the really hard part – to choose to communicate positively.
I also know a whole lot more than most women about the menstrual cycle and its far-reaching, complex connections to our sexual, reproductive and general health. I believe if we all knew more, girls and women would be much healthier and happier.
September 15th, 2008 at 11:25 am
I know a lot about…
XTC – awesome English pop group
transfering to a UC or CSU
SARS (the computer scheduling system, not the disease)
Lisa (the Harmonious Wit!)
September 15th, 2008 at 11:50 am
I know a lot about astrology, people’s emotions, and current events.
September 15th, 2008 at 11:56 am

September 15th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Art history, crafting, nursing babies, baking, fashion, and Arbonne skin care. I also know lots about police work from dispatching and having a hubbie who’s a Mountie.

Sounds amazing, especially since I am feeling like a sloth today! The full moon always seems to make my household a bit owly.

I can testify to the extent of expertise I possess regarding my own ignorance. Aside from that, I do know a little bit about cats.
September 15th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
I know a lot about Acupuncture and it’s power to aid in the healing process, I know a lot about exercise and strength training, about how to deal with people in a way that gives them what they need and encourages their process.
I also must admit to far too much knowledge of pop culture and the celebs…it is like the junk food in my week that I enjoy so much but know is bad for me. hehe
September 15th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Don’t know if that is considered a skill, but I know a lot about living in a country as a foreigner. I am a 5th generation migrant. My family has moved almost every generation.
Also, I am good at organizing and transforming problems and obstacles into opportunities. But I can only do that for myself. I am interested to learn how to motivate people so I can use that skill for something good. Currently, I am learning more about natural living and pregnancy.
September 15th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
I used to be a trivial pursuit queen because of this quirk. No one could beat me. Don’t worry. You have a fabby and retentive memory and mind and you do eventually grow out of retaining “Lives of famous people” and get on with life (yours) as it is meant to be lived.
Boring machinery totally defeats me even stuff that I really should know how to work like what is under a car bonnet. If my husband goes oversea without me, something that happens now and then the local garage is put on high alert. “CAUTION MIDDLE AGED WOMEN IN SOLE CHARGE OF CAR AND MECHANICALLY CHALLENGED” They love it helping me with the tyres and filling it with petrol etc
September 15th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
sorry reply to you came up just below in wrong place
September 15th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
ditto to Kath see comment on pop culture below
September 15th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
I actually know quite a bit about relationships. I feel like I am the one all of my friends come to when they need a voice of reason when stuck with indecision or vague direction. I am not the type to just say what I think but rather help friends get to answers that they already knew. I wish I knew something more handy… like sewing!
September 15th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
I know a whole bunch about a mother’s love. I’ve been in the hospital with viral meningitis, and my mom has been there with me the whole time and has taken me home now to recouperate with my dad and her. She has been spoiling her 39 year old baby, and I’m completely overwhelmed by her kindness and love. As a single woman, I don’t know what I would have done with out her! All of you moms out there need to know how much you rock…even on a “not good mothering day”. Thanks!
September 15th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Nancy I love your comments about the right shade of pink. I have started wearing pink and it could be have said to have revolutionised my life. Finding your inner girly feminine side.
But I still look my best in aqua
September 15th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
These two little boobs fed 3 baby boys while working full time in the E.R….just ASK me about breastfeeding baby!!!!
September 15th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Debbie I have a friend who does this and it totally melts me heart when it happens. She collects stuff and makes the cards herself.
It is quite as good and valued as a warm hug
September 15th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Yay Linda, This is the prettiest and most elegant web site and for those of you still learning about these things (am I the only one) scroll over her name and click!
September 15th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Greetings to you Gracious Bold
LOL from Bold Grace
September 15th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Joe I regard this as quite a deep comment. I love the statement: Only the truly shallow know themselves. The depth of the human soul is a full ocean.
Cats are cool thing to know about. we can learn lots from a well loved cat about mental health and self care.
I don’t go much on the way they wash their rear ends tho’
But who among us can cast the first stone
September 15th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
aaahhhh! I love it!!
Happy Monday!
September 15th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
I’ve already answered this question today, but I have to say that pretty soon, I’m going to be an expert on ME! I finally got my copy of “Style Statement” Whooo Hooooo I got it yesterday.
The book is beautiful Carrie and Danielle.
September 15th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
“I don’t go much on the way they wash their rear ends tho’”
I’m laughing myself silly! Thanks!
September 15th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Take a bow. Breast feeding mothers are my heros.
How are the brawlers today?
September 15th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
I believe I know most about how to make the most of every day. My husband says I know most how to love life and my daughters think I mostly know way too much about everybody…..and want to know why I care to know so many people and their stories. I know alot about health and wellness. I know much about thriving as a parent and nurturing a family life that doesn’t include “crazy makers”.
September 15th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
I’m like that too! I know a little about a lot. Besides what I said above, I could tell you a bit about English grammar, choosing the right dog, the pros and cons of consumer credit, getting healthy, not having kids… but I’m an expert on nothing.
September 15th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
I know most about breastfeeding – yes, would have to say that I literally could be a certified lactation consultant. Have had every ailment that goes along with it, and can diagnose a new mama’s tata problems like that! I am very welcomed by the new breastfeeding mamas, in the mom & tot groups that I go to…
September 15th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Dear Gracious Bold Welcome!
September 15th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Books by English authors Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl.
But I’d rather here more about Steve Winwood, Danielle?!
September 15th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
that would be “hear”…not here…feeling compelled to correct my own typos today.
September 15th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Anytime, ladies! I (heart) trip planning. It’s kinda like personal shopping, but with thousand-year-old monuments and buildings.
September 15th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Only if the answers cause you to touch your own innate wisdom. I love it if people come up with better and wiser answers. The world is inside you
September 15th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
I love my wife.
September 15th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Also Find The U2 CD All that you can’t leave behind its gor a lovely song on it called Grace
Love their lyrics around pearls. As soon as Carrie said the word to me I saw pearls
September 15th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
I know an embarrassing amount about cars.
September 15th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
I know a lot about design and branding and how to use these to great advantage when communicating in the commercial world.
I think I also know about how to listen to others, the spoken and the unspoken… pity i forget to use this skill on myself sometimes!
September 15th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
I know a lot about Japanese art, artists, courtesans, legends and customs. That, and Eastern Medicine. Skin. Japanese names.
September 15th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
I’m with you there. Being close to people in a meaningful way has always been something I’ve aspired to.
September 15th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Kristen Please keep us posted
It’s a bit like waiting for news of a birth only with more variety of answers to wait for

Congratulations, Gracious Bold. Your Style Statement is wonderful.
September 15th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Spelling! Its so important that I forgot to mention it. That’s a big one.
September 15th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
That’s wonderful! The book is absolutely fabulous, and I know you’re going to have a real adventure reading it. Make sure you let us know what you find your Style Statement to be.
September 15th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
I know a lot about genealogy research, scrapbooking, art, music, cooking and baking. I keep buying and reading books about creativity, mixed media, photography, color psychology, graphic design, personal branding, marketing, success, etc. but the more I read the more I know how little I really know! There is always something new to learn! One thing just leads to another.
September 16th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
I know about journeys, pain, laughter, blessings, joys, impossible love, to be unconditionally loved, friendship, I think I know most about friendship. I have friends that are strong and sure, others are comfort, others a good shoulder to cry on, and yet others are a laugh a minute! Yes friendship. I have been blessed with good and beautiful friends and hopefully blessed by being a good friend!
October 1st, 2008 at 9:44 am
For better or for worse I know a lot about pop culture, I'm really good at forecasting trends, I know how to write a good letter, I know how to follow a good recipe and I would like to consider myself a good friend.
November 12th, 2008 at 7:01 am
I know about writing letters and cards to my family and dear friends. I have been writing letters since I was a child. My grandmother and her sisters lived out of town and it was the only way I had of keeping in contact. I write to everyone more often with the internet, but I still usually write a formal letter and attach it to the email. Letter is not a lost art, some of us keep it alive.
