What Are Laser Eye Surgery Complications?

Healing, Health & Wellness, Vision correction | January 19th, 2010 No comments

The safest eye surgeries are conducted by laser eye clinics. These surgeries are very safe and have been tried and tested by millions around the world. As safe as they are, they are not completely fool-proof. Like in any other kind of surgery, laser eye surgery complications can arise due to many factors, some of which are beyond anybody’s control. As much care and precaution is taken by laser eye clinics, some laser eye surgery complications can still creep in after the surgery.

All laser eye correction surgery is done with the use of different types of lasers. Laser eye correction surgery involves the removal of some corneal tissue with precision by a laser, which shapes the cornea changing its focusing power. The most popular laser used in laser eye correction surgery is the LASIK.

Some of the risks and complications of laser eye correction surgery are:

  • Some of the patients can lose their vision. A few patients can lose their lines of vision on vision chart, which cannot be corrected with the use of glasses, contact lenses, or surgery as a result of treatment.
  • Some patients could develop debilitating symptoms. A few patients develop glares, halos, and also double vision that can affect night- time vision seriously. Even with a good vision on the vision chart, some patients cannot view things as well where low contrast is involved, such as in the night or in the fog, after treatment as compared to before treatment.
  • The treatment could end up as under treatment and at times over treatment. Only small percentage of patients gets a 20/20 sight without glasses or contacts. Additional treatment may be required but may not be possible. Glasses or contact lenses after surgery might still be required. If reading glasses were required before surgery, they may still be needed post surgery.
  • Some patients develop a severe dry eyes syndrome. After surgery, the eye cannot produce sufficient tears for keeping the surface of the eye moist. Dry eye can not only cause a lot of discomfort, but can lower visual quality as well due to the blurring and similar symptoms. Therapy by using Intensive drops and using plugs or such other procedures might be required.
  • Results generally are not very satisfying in patients who have large refractive error. Expectations should be discussed with the doctor. One should realize that glasses and contacts could still be required after surgery.
  • In the case of some far sighted patients, the results could reduce with age. The amount of better vision experienced post surgery may reduce with age.
  • Long-term information is not available. As LASIK is a new technology and the first laser treatment got approval only in 1998 long term effects are not known. The long-term safety is also not proven, and neither is the long term effectiveness from LASIK surgery.

Keeping all these potential complications in mind, an informed decision must be taken about this elective cosmetic surgery.
