What Actions Are Key to Ecological Sustainability?

Going Green, Inspiration, Living Green | January 18th, 2010 No comments

Eco-systems around the world influence the quality of life people end up having.   This can be explained by the fact that there is a direct link between ecology, the economy and the society. Attaining ecological sustainability goes a long way to enhance the welfare of the society and relieve economic burdens that are caused by degradation in the environment.

It takes decisions and changes in behavior for a community to attain a sustainable environment. This means taking the environment business seriously. Communities have to put sustainability policies in place which can govern how environment issues are handled. A lot goes in educating the community at large on the importance of adopting positive behavior towards change in environment. These are some of the actions that need to be taken towards preserving the environment:

-          Natural resources should be used sparingly to avoid wastage. They include things like water and renewable energy.

-         Water harvesting mechanisms should be put in place to harvest rainwater during the rainy season. This water can then be used to complement what is in the available water sources.

-         Preservation of natural habitats should be core as destruction can lead to loss of wildlife and plant cover. They include rivers, water catchment areas, dams and forests.

-         Releasing of carbon and other gaseous substances should be controlled and if possible totally eliminated so as to keep the atmosphere healthy.

-         People should be encouraged to use public means within the city centers so as to reduce the amount of carbon emitted from vehicle fuels. When many private cars are used for transport purposes, more toxic emissions are released. These are what end up putting a seal around the ozone layer, leading to global warming. Many of the unknown illnesses on the rise today are as a result of inhaling these substances.

-         People should be encouraged to plant trees as much as possible to preserve soil and prevent erosion.

-         Waste management systems should be put in place to ensure correct disposal. Dirty water disposal systems can be different from those of solid waste disposal. If the water is still good enough, redirecting it elsewhere and using it for other purposes would be a good move.

-         Farming methods should be changed to adopt mechanisms that are friendly to the environment. Departure from use of fertilizers and other chemicals that go deep into the soil and which cannot be completely broken down only serves to make the soil poorer. Sprays too should be avoided as they leave many chemicals in the air. People should be encouraged to grow organic foods to cut down intake of chemical laden foodstuffs.

-         People can also be encouraged to buy green products and other environment-friendly products whose manufacturing process does not harm the environment. This will encourage growth of environment business where people lean more towards production of green products using locally grown plants.

Ecological sustainability will lead to a reduction in many of the social and economic burdens being experienced currently.
