Ahhh.....the scale......now there's an invention that could drive us all insane!

I totally agree with what you've written here. The scale can dictate a good day or a bad day for those of us who jump onto it. The words that fly through my head on that scale are just not pretty words. Even if I'm in a great mood, the numbers that show up on that thing can send me into a downward spiral of rather self-deprecating thoughts and feelings. We are often our own worst critics and needlessly send ourselves into a pit of despair over those numbers.

You have made perfect sense in saying that we need to be happy with our weight now because that is who we are at this moment in time. And, in the meantime, a little more care in recognizing when we are full, eating more sensibly in choice and simply feeling our clothing and how they fit, tells us whether we are on track or whether we need to simply listen better to our bodies, rather than the scale.

Great article! It's really woken me up again!

Colleen, what great insights! Thanks for sharing. I prefer keeping track of how my clothes fit vs. stepping on the scale which feels so judgemental and a huge hurdle to overcome.

WOW! Nicely said. I totally agree and am taking you up on your advise. No more scale! My mom gets on her scale a couple of times a day and it really affects her attitude. When I'm visiting, I wonder everytime she walks into the bathroom if she's going to come out pissed. She's in her 70's by the way. This kind of self sabotage has been going on for a while in this country. I'll be having a talk with her, or sending her here to read this article.

Colleen you are so right about the scale. I haven't owned one in forever. Although sometimes this leaves me thinking I weigh much less than I actually do. It doesn't really matter though, does it? How much you weigh that is. I'm just happy I fit into my clothes.

Well. I think everyone is different. Some people need to weigh in some people don't.
There are some research studies that state people who weigh themselves regularly gain less weight than those who don't.

See these blog posts about it:
http://www.simpleweight.com/blog/news/weigh-you...

http://www.simpleweight.com/blog/news/another-r...

http://www.simpleweight.com/blog/news/four-tips...

I think people should exercise more. If you exercise consistently you can eat what you want and not have to worry about your weight. Just like your job, the harder you work the better the results.

I only get weighed at the doctor! I haven't owned a scale in years and years. I base evaluations of my weight on whether or not I can fit into a particular pair of jeans :-)

I haven't owned a scale for decades. Getting rid of it was the best move I've ever made. I don't believe that weight is an accurate measure of one's fitness level, anyway. I will measure myself from time to time, as a way of keeping tabs, much the same way I will monitor by bank account to make sure I'm not putting myself in a position to be overdrawn.

I am not my waist size. The men I date seem to think I'm pretty cute, regardless of whether I fit the 'ideal' body type or not. Personally, I think sexy is defined by how confident and comfortable I am in my own skin. It's all just packaging anyway. What really matters is what's inside. Trite? I don't think so.
