What If Your Ideal Weight Can Only Occur If You Give Up On Weighing Yourself?
The relationship with my scale has always erred on the side of humbling me to nothingness. All of my other accomplishments (and good in the world) disappeared if I stepped on the scale, and it said something other than what I needed to. There were days when everything hinged upon what the scale spit out at me. Really, regardless of whether it indicated something “good” or “bad,” the number itself tended to take on a life of its own.
I used the number to judge my worth, my capability, and most of all myself. I was and am so much more than a number. Clearly, I was unable to keep it in perspective. So a few years ago, I came to my good senses and got rid of my scale. In fact, I decided not to weigh myself unless held at gunpoint (which hasn’t happened yet).
Perhaps that is why I love the title of this Glamour blog post: Get To Your Happy Weight. Maybe because happy and weight are in the same sentence. What a novel concept. However I think the title is misleading. That is, I think your “happy weight” can be today. I don’t think you have to get to your ideal weight to be happy. In fact, I think it is entirely the other way around. Though you may have to spend some time apart from your scale to know what I mean.
Now I know a scale-fast is not for everyone (nothing ever is), but it has revolutionized the way I view myself. I don’t identify with a number and give it power over me anymore. If I put on a few pounds, I know by the way my clothes fit and don’t sensationalize it by stepping on the scale every few hours to see if it has changed. Instead, I note the difference and just make an effort to eat when I am hungry and stop when I am full. Try to be a tad more active. That’s it. No theatrics. Much less judgment, and I cannot say this strongly enough, much less drama.
Without my scale, I am left with more confidence and peace in this world. I can also honestly say pleased with my body. And I have no idea how much I weigh.
