Career, Wealth, Work at home | December 1st, 2009

Freelancing virtual assistant jobs are something out there that will allow you to do anything from appointment setting, word processing, process medical billing, web design and the list goes on. There are just some basic things that you should think about and you’ll be well on your way to a freelancing career.

Consider the Field

You’ll want to think of the field that you’re going to want to work in. Break down your likes and dislikes and your interests in the different fields that are out there. This is going to allow you to pick the right jobs that are good for you and then work on building your client base after getting started and landing your first customer.

When you’re looking into what field you want to work in you should conduct some research to find out the job duties and become familiar with all of the terminology that they might use so you’re more prepared when writing out your cover letter and resume.

Resume

You’ll want to make sure that you don’t just use a generic resume. You’ll want to use your resume to highlight the specific skill set you have and the corresponding experience that’s going to make you the right person for this job. Even if you don’t have the specific industry knowledge you’ll want o make sure that you list all of your other skills that would help you flourish in the job.

Home Office

Setup a dedicated work space. This may seem like something that isn’t something to consider right away but you’re going to want to treat it as an office so you can be prepared for each day and make sure that you’re productive.

Rate Determination

You’ll need to figure out the rate that you’re going to want to ask for as almost all of the companies are going to ask you to submit a bid on the position. When bidding you should consider the savings that you’re getting by working from home and lower your bid a little to make yourself competitive.

Get Your Foot in the Door

Getting your foot in the door is the most important aspect as these types of jobs are competitive ones. Make an offer that you’ll work a week at no cost and if they aren’t satisfied then you will move on and take nothing for the work. In other words, make them an offer they can’t refuse. This isn’t something that is necessary but if you can afford it there are a lot of employers that can’t turn something like this down. If you’re good at what you do this isn’t going to lead to just a one week job it’ll go in the future. You’ll also find that even though you offer this a lot of employers will pay you anyway and just admire your confidence. Be careful as to how you approach it. You want to sound confident without being cocky or coming off as desperate.

Do a great job and go into each day with a focus.
