Understanding Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa covers a wide range of yoga postures where all postures are performed as you inhale or exhale. The vinyasa yoga classes can include sun salutations. This form includes continuous movement and stretching. Some yoga instructors also include chanting. No vinyasa class can be predicted as it gives the teacher complete control over how the class is designed and what the sequences are.

The poses are changed smoothly making it look like a dance and as there is a flow, it is called as vinyasa flow yoga. It is derived from yoga styles like ashtanga and power yoga uses this method of yoga. There is a lot of movement in this type of yoga and the poses are flexible as well. You may not always like what one instructor teaches when it comes to vinyasa. So keep changing your instructor till you find one whose style suits you best.

You can search the internet for videos and instructions to perform vinyasa on your own. The sequences can be changed a little in this form of yoga to suit the practitioner. Usually the poses in yoga are static in nature but here, the poses are connected. The term can also refer to connecting the poses with one’s breath. The breathing process is an important part of yoga and is an aspect that is considered while judging a pose. Most of the classes prefer silence during these poses while some others practice chanting. Both these settings help in getting the mind to concentrate on the poses, breathing and also to meditate.

In a class that teaches vinyasa yoga, you can even expect to sweat a lot. Sometimes the room will be heated to help you sweat. The intensity of the vinyasa flow yoga can vary depending on the instructor. A very advanced class can be a good workout with cardio and strength building moves. As it also improves flexibility, it can provide a complete overall workout for the body.

One should start off with simple, easy poses to build the flexibility and strength necessary for the harder yoga poses. Some incorporate meditation as a part of vinyasa flow yoga. There are six series in ashtanga yoga and vinyasa takes a few poses from the series and don’t stick to the rules as much as astanga. Although frowned upon by some traditional practitioners, this yoga is more fun and popular. Vinyasa can be modifies to suit the goals you have set for yourself in yoga.

This form is loosely based on surya namaskara, also known as salutation to the sun. Sometimes the sequences will also have dance and martial art influence. All that these classes look for is to make the sequences fun, smooth and yet give the individuals a good workout. A lot of CDs and DVDs are available where the instructors tell you what to do as they perform the poses themselves. It is a good way to start if you don’t have time to go looking for classes.
