Types of Wine Glasses
Design Fundamentals
When it comes to wine glasses all of them will follow the same basic design concept of the tulip shape. This has three important components:
- The base which is responsible for keeping the glass upright
- The stem which will allow a person to hold the glass without the heat transfer from their hand to the glass and warming the wine
- The body which will be contributory to maximization of the wines flavors and aromas for that specific wine
The wine glass is really important because they are designed to make sure to direct the wine to the specific parts of the mouth; whether it is the tongue, sides of the mouth, etc… places where it’s going to be the most appreciated. It is suggested that you be purchasing and using a wine glass that is composed of either crystal or at least another similar thin glass as a thicker glass will influence the taste of a wine.
Types of Wine Glasses for the Connoisseur
When you’re looking at wine glasses there are so many different options out there that you can have but there are really only a few glasses that are needed:
- Red Wine Glasses – These are going to be both taller and wider so they’ll allow all the complexities that come with a red wine to be completely enjoyed and appreciated
- White Wine Glasses – The white wine glass is going to be smaller than the glass for your red wine and for a white wine you’re going to want a glass that has an opening that is just a bit larger than the body of the glass itself. The reason for this is it will allow the wine to hit the points of the tip and the sides of your tongue to more enjoy the sweetness of the wine. You’re going to want to have a taller and more straight glass for an aged white wine as this will allow the wine to go to the end and the sides of the tongue. This wine has a bolder flavor and is better enjoyed at these areas
There is no steadfast rule when it comes to choosing your glasses; however, if you’re making the investment; especially when it comes to a more expensive aged wine you should get the right glass to compliment it so you can completely enjoy the investment you’ve made.
Concluding
Unless you’re a true wine connoisseur or one that wants to completely learn to understand and recognize the individual complexities of all of the different wines; there is no reason for you to get different glasses for each and every wine type. While most will use four different wine glasses you could easily just use one for each of the colors of wine. When it really comes down to it it’s really about what is going to be the best for you and your personal enjoyment. When it comes to that there is no steadfast rule.
