There are many types of laser eye surgery. Although most of them are fundamentally similar to each other, there are some inherent differences in the way they are done and in the kinds of treatments each one is used for.
Conventional lasik is the reshaping of the eye, which is available on almost all types of lasers and will fix your eye like the glasses prescription. This laser eye surgery is sufficient for most candidates but involves a marginally greater chance of causing vision problems like glares, halos or difficulty seeing in low light than the more advanced kinds of laser related treatment.
Another type of lasik treatment is the wavelight laser. The treatment uses the patient’s spectacle prescription as a basis too but adds a few other factors like thickness and corneal curvature to the surgery.

This method applies laser energy to the periphery of your cornea and this method has been proven to reduce complications such as glare, halos and problems with vision at night. This has a number of similarities to the previous LASIK. The major difference with wavefront eye -guided treatment will be that it treats the patient’s refractive errors as well as the alterations that are unique for every patient’s eye, called high order aberrations. In this procedure a special three-dimensional mapping is performed before surgery. This helps the surgeon with identifying any minor problems that may occur in the patient’s optical system. When these problems are found to be severe, they may have an effect on the vision. If very severe problems are found during the mapping process, treatment using wavefront eye map is started.
Advanced surface ablation – There are a large number of methods that use an excimer laser to fix the cornea in a same way to lasik does, without the for a corneal flap. These are generally called advanced surface ablations and they include treatments like laser subepithelial keratomileusis (LASEK), photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), and also Epi-LASIK.
Conductive keratoplasty (CK) is a technique of eye correction where hyperopia or presbyopia can be temporarily corrected. The CK involves using radio frequency waves on the cornea to make the peripheral cornea shrink and result in central steepening. Although it has an impressive safety record, the effects are found to be only temporary and a lot of cases of regression have been reported a few years after the surgery.
Also known as Intacs, Intracorneal ring segments are used on patients who suffering from a mild myopia and keratoconus. Here, Intacs are very thin plastic segments that are implanted in to the peripheral region of the cornea so that they can flatten the cornea from the centre. Once they are implanted, most of the patients don’t even feel the rings. In almost all cases, the effects are completely reversible and if necessary they can be removed. Visual recovery lags behind lasik treatments and is much slower. The results are also not quite as predictable.
These are all the various types of laser eye surgery. All surgeries like prk, lasik and wavefront can be undertaken after consulting a specialist and understanding individual needs.
