Traditional Wooden Toys

Daily | October 5th, 2009 No comments

Toys have always been an important part of childhood ever since the most early of civilizations and while some of the toys today are of course very different there are still some that are the same. Children from those days played with things like dolls, horses, etc… though all of the earliest discovered toys are all made of wood.

Wood toys are still a good option though as they are much more durable than those made of plastic and any higher tech toy is going to need constant changes of batteries and have a likely chance and capacity to be broken. Wooden toys are one that can stand the test of time.

Many of today’s toys are ones that seem to encourage more solitary play and entertain the child instead of the child entertaining himself/herself. A mistake would be to assume that a toy has to be either electronic and/or complex for it to be educational. This couldn’t be further from the truth. An effective toy is one that helps the child to develop many different aspects; such as a wooden number puzzle would encourage developmental aspects of:

  • Hand to eye coordination
  • Motor skills
  • Problem solving
  • Spatial awareness
  • Concept of numbers
  • Number sequencing awareness

They are by all means a lot easier for the child to handle with their tiny hands so it helps to foster independence as well.

Wooden toys are inherently very simple things to play with so it makes a child use their imagination and fosters cognitive development and motor skills. Play sets foster social and emotional development as well. The inherent educational value comes from its simplicity.
