Fitness | November 17th, 2009

As obesity levels are growing at alarming levels throughout the country, the concept of Family Fitness is catching on like wild fire. It serves two very important purposes at the same time- you get to spend quality time with your family having fun and you get to ensure the health and fitness levels of your family. While more and more parents are interested in trying out this concept, mainly in the interest of their kids fitness, they find themselves out of ideas with regard to activities and fitness exercises they can take on for family fitness. Here is a whole list of tips and suggestions:

  • Weekly, go with your entire family for a fitness outing. This involves participating in an activity that requires a moderate amount of physical exertion with your whole family. There are many activities to choose from- walking, jogging, running, swimming, cycling, skating, trekking, horse-riding and rowing just to name a few.
  • Once a week, have a dance party, where every member of the family has to dance for a sustained amount of time. Not only will the whole family have a vigorous workout, you will also have a whole lot of fun.
  • Once a month, go camping for an extended weekend. Choose a location that will require a certain amount of physical exertion to get to. Getting there and back should provide you with a thorough workout. Not only will your body feel good, your mind will also feel relaxed and rejuvenated after such an outing.
  • Invest in gaming consoles like Wii that have fitness oriented games like Wii Fit. They are multi-player games which the entire family can participate in, even though only one person can play at a time. These games provide an edge of competitiveness which adds to the fun of getting fit.
  • Once a week, ensure that you do all your fitness exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, squats, etc. Ideally, these should be done every day, but never less than once a week. Work out a schedule that works best for you.
  • Play games that require physical exertion. Games like tug of war can provide a lot of physical exercise. Kids really enjoy such games and they should be encouraged to play them, as they go a long way in ensuring kids fitness.
  • Organize games like Treasure Hunt, where participants are only allowed to jog or run. Make up your own rules to ensure that everyone in the family gets a good workout out of playing this game.
  • Play sports like volleyball, basketball, soccer, badminton, etc. Change the rules a little bit to make the game more challenging and physically exerting.
  • Use Pogo sticks or make slits and walk o them. These can be fun as well as invigorating. However, take full precautions to prevent any physical injury.
  • Once a week, take up the practice of Yoga, Pilates, Martial arts or some of fitness regimen. Learn aerobics or gymnastics and practice every day. Using techniques from different disciplines will ensure overall fitness and development.
