Health & Wellness | December 16th, 2009

Everywhere you look there are yoga studios opening up and more and more people seem to be taking to yoga. Maybe even you are thinking about beginning Yoga practice, but it is usually the first step that is the most difficult. Once you have started Yoga practice on a regular basis, you will start feeling the positive benefits and you will need no encouragement to keep it up. But starting Yoga practice in the first place is a step where most people still stumble. Here are some tips to help you begin Yoga and make sure that you keep at it.

The best way to start is by equipping yourself with some Yoga knowledge. Go out and buy a couple of Yoga books on the history and philosophy of Yoga. This will give you a deeper understanding of Yoga and how it is more than just an exercise routine, but a way of life. You will find out how Yoga originated and developed over 5 millennia and how it adapted to the different needs of the times as well as the practitioners. You will also get a deeper understanding on the purpose of Yoga, which is body, mind, spirit equilibrium, and not just a healthy body and mind.

As you will find while perusing Yoga books, there are currently many different styles of Yoga available. On one hand, there are highly energetic styles of yoga like power yoga and hot yoga and on the other, there are deeply meditative styles of yoga like kundalini yoga. It is important to know that these are styles of highly advanced yoga and not suitable for people who are just beginning yoga. You may want to pursue any of these styles at a later stage, but first you will need the help of simple yoga to prepare your body as well your mind to take on more advanced yoga styles.

Hatha Yoga is the name of a series of yoga poses and breathing techniques that are considered to be the best for people who are just starting yoga practice. These yoga poses and breathing exercises are simple to perform, but they go a long way in making your body more agile as well as fitter. These also help in controlling the mind and bringing it under your control so that you are not troubled by unnecessary worries, concerns, thoughts and emotions. You will start seeing enormous benefits for yourself once you have mastered simple yoga poses and breathing techniques.

One of the decisions you will need to make when you are beginning yoga is whether you want to practice yoga at home or whether you want to enroll in a Yoga studio or at a gym. Opinions differ and you should do what works best for you, although experts agree that the presence of a mentor and a trainer yoga teacher at the outset can be highly advantageous and is an opportunity one should not miss out on.
