The Sound of Your Soul: 5 Tips to Explore The Power of Your Voice

Creativity | July 11th, 2008 No comments

We do Style Statement sessions exclusively on the telephone. We’ve become good listeners. Very good. We listen to facts and dreams, and we hear the sounds of matter and soul.

Sometimes the sound of a voice says as much as the words spoken...I am woman hear me roar. I carry the weight of my world. I am free and I know it. I am scared to move. I come bearing gifts. Unconsciously used, our voice can reverberate old messages…speak when you’re spoken to, don’t talk to strangers, hold your tongue, don’t talk back.

The next time you connect with someone LISTEN to their sound. Forget their clothes, their eyes, their sentences. Like someone blind might trace the shape of your face, let your ears track the spirit of another.

Close your eyes and speak to yourself. Who do you sound like? Where does your voice come from? Your past, your eyebrows, your cravings, your belly? Chant your name twelve times. Sing. Whisper. Cackle. Ommm. How does your voice make you feel? Explored and loved, your voice can become as powerful a force as your muscles, your intelligence, and your sexuality.

5 Tips to Explore The Power of Your Voice

Awilda Verdejo

1. VOICE COACHING

Sessions with voice midwife-coach, Awilda Verdejo to explore your true voice. Awilda is a former Opera Diva (the Real Thing, sang with Pavarotti, played Aida…) Her personal coaching (she also works on telephone) isn’t focused on singing skills. It’s about tapping into the seat of your power and bringing that forward with every word you breathe. Carrie and I did a private workshop with her, and sister, did we get uncorked.

The Vagina Monologues

2. VOICE INSPIRATION

The Vagina Monologues (DVD) is a stellar display of truth spoken, cried, squealed and roared. If you haven’t seen Eve Ensler’s heart-gripping, body-tingling one-woman performance, rent her Broadway play and LISTEN. (It’s also available in a book.)

3. VOICE LESSONS

Take some. You don’t need to have aspirations for Broadway. Consider it sonic therapy. Learning the range of your vocal chords can be an incredibly cathartic, empowering experience. La La La La La La La LAAAAH!  If you go to the SERVICES + LESSONS section on Craigslist, you’ll have access to dozens of potentially amazing instructors in your area.

Navjit Kandola

4. SOUL COACHING

Navjit Kandola is a “soul technician.” I’ve done numerous sessions with her to clear thought forms that stood between me and my whole voice.

Dead Can Dance

5. SOUL MUSIC

Dead Can Dance is a “band” that’s more like a ceremonious tribe of cosmic gypsies. Vocals are shared by Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard and their mystical sounds are purely that – mystical. Gerrard sings some primal, nonsensical language that rings of Arabic and ocean-deep longings. Enchanting. Dead Can Dance DVDs are best played in the dark.

Go make some sounds…Sounds like you.
