The Importance of Kids Fitness

Child fitness, Fitness, Health & Wellness | November 14th, 2009 No comments

Over the last decade or so, more and more people have become more conscious of their health. This can be evidenced by the growing number of fitness clubs, gyms, Yoga classes, etc. As the health industry continues to grow by leaps and bounds, the attention is now being focused on kids fitness. As we examine this field closer, we find that it is vastly different from adult fitness programs. There are a number of reasons for it:

Firstly, many types of fitness programs are just plain unsuitable for them. For instance, at a young and tender age, the bones of children are still in the process of formation. If any undue pressure is exerted on them, they may not be properly formed, i.e. they may either be stunted or misshapen. Wrong exercises can also stunt the physical growth of the child. That is why it is very important to ensure that children follow the right fitness work out for their age. But, mainly because of this, many fields of fitness training like weight training for instance, become completely inaccessible to kids.

One very big problem when attempting to engage children in any kind of activity is their short attention span. They get quickly bored, especially of monotonous, repetitive activities. On the other hand, a typical work out at a fitness center is bound to be monotonous and repetitive. Hence, facilities that work perfectly well for adults will not work in the case of children. There have to be special classes for kids, where they are engaged in fun and exciting activity while ensuring that their body gets the required amount of exercise. This requires a completely different and separate infrastructure for kids’ fitness training. Such children fitness clubs, while they do exist, are not numerous enough to meet the present levels of demand.

However, it is important to ensure that children get their regular exercise. Obesity amongst kids has been looming large over America and every year it gets worse. At the moment, a majority of American children are overweight, many of them obese. Obesity can come in the way of a child’s overall development. It restricts his ability to be involved in all activities and games, making them feel lonely and left out. They may even be singled out by their peers and may suffer psychological trauma.

Many communities organize their efforts to create a suitable kids fitness program. They make use of open playgrounds and involve kids in a variety of exercises and teaching them new techniques like Yoga. They play games which involve a certain amount of physical exertion. They hold races and even have training camps to train for these races. They hold contests for cycling, swimming, etc. just for kids and reward winning children with gifts that would help further their fitness regime.

If you do not have any fitness clubs for kids in your vicinity, you can involve your children in fun activities at home while ensuring that they get their exercise doing those activities.
