Testimonial: next to joyful tears
Hello Carrie & Danielle!
I wanted to thank you and Carrie for writing Style Statement. I attended the Seattle launch party with my best friend and couldn’t be happier about meeting you. We immediately went home and began reading, calling each other, more often then usual, just to see where each other was at with finding our Style Statements.
Both of us would say, “I’m getting there.” or “This is really harder than I thought it was going to be.”
Laura (the BFF) found hers pretty quickly in only a few days, and it fit her to a tee, Traditional Counselor. I, on the other hand, took a bit longer to find mine: about three weeks. In the midst of filling a spiral notebook, I couldn’t help but wonder if I was ever going to find my own Style Statement. I would dig deep for answers, knowing that being honest with myself was going to be key.
When it finally hit me I was in a Tullys on Alki beach and immediately grabbed the cell phone and called Laura. Normally that last sentence would be nothing out of the ordinary but picture a standing-room only Tullys on the beach and a uncommonly sunny day in Seattle, where everyone is watching me to see when I will leave because I have the coveted cushy chair by the fireplace, and now being the ‘next to joyful tears girl’ that made a strange gasping noise while bumbling with the contents strewn about her lap all while trying to make a call on her cell phone like she is in some sort of soap opera.
This understandably turned a few heads in curiosity and a lot of blushing on my part. Nonetheless I called Laura and read her the definition of Enduring and Playful! I could hear her smile through the phone. Not only was that me to a tee… there would be no way I was anything else at this point in my life. A year ago, I may not have been this but I have become Enduring more than I would like to admit. I beamed for about 2 days straight, calling everyone I know telling them I had a Style Statement and then explaining for the next 20 minutes how they had to get your book and report back to me with their Style Statement as soon as they knew it.
But something hit me in the midst of my glowing and rereading what my two words were… my Style Statement exposes me in a way that I didn’t see it do for some of the other people in the book. I am enduring… I push through, I stick to things, I don’t give up… ok sure but it mentioned that I do it almost to a fault and it hit me. I always knew I was a bit stubborn and am fairly driven, but have I been really ‘driving’ in the wrong direction? I don’t think that it is enduring alone that caused me to think this… it was the addition of playful… my decision to smile, have fun, be happy in light of even some of the most difficult times. Has being playful been my defense mechanism or necessary escape from the endurance I put myself through? I could list tons of personal examples where this is the pattern… being faced with a challenge, positive or not, and then turning to being the ‘perky/bubbling’ girl to make it easier to get through.
My Style Statement has become a badge I am proud of that I am a balance of two things that need each other to co-exist. I am still working on the balance of learning when the stubborn part of my statement has gone too far and when the playful is an escape rather than the honest outgoing person I know I am. I really think that my style statement has shown me a side of me I wasn’t ready to admit but am comforted in finding.
