ITEMS TAGGED: Gretchen Rubin

Am I boring you? Gretchen Rubin wants to know.

Authenticity is a two way street. Just because you’re impassioned about something doesn’t mean it will titillate everyone (sad as that is.) Passion usually pulls people in for a closer look. But be sure to watch for signs of glazed eyes and flat responses so that you can take your enthusiasm elsewhere if need be.

This is a great post from Gretchen Rubin at The Happiness Project:

Are you boring? Seven tips for knowing if you’re boring someone.

What do you do to promote your own happiness?

Happiness is most often a choice. And that ‘choice muscle’ is something we can strengthen with small, daily actions. And who better to know than The Happiness Project founder, Gretchen Rubin?! She’s just completed a memoir about the year she “spent test-driving every principle, tip, theory, and scientific study” on happiness. Today’s question comes from Gretchen.

Vancouver TrailsCarrie says: The most important happy choice I commit to everyday is exercising outside. When I am in nature moving & sweating I let go of my worries, feed my muscles and fit into my jeans. My other happiness choice is taking time to share a cup of Karryn’s earl grey tea!!!

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Stadium ArcadiumDanielle says: The most important, happy-choice I make EVERY day is snuggles with my boys. A day without devotional snuggles is a day without…devotional snuggles! Very loud funk on the drive to work also does wonders for my soul.

Gretchen says: My first priority toward happiness is to take care of my body.
I work hard to get enough sleep (gosh, it’s hard to turn out the light—the time after the kids go to sleep is precious). I try to exercise most days. I’m careful not to let myself get too hungry. I bring a sweater everywhere, because I’m always cold. I always keep a bottle of Advil in my bag.

I’ve found that when I feel well-rested, energetic, and comfortable, I’m far more likely to undertake the activities that I know will make me happy. I’m polite when someone is rude to me in line at the drugstore. I take the time to email a friend. I set up a tea party with my daughters. I unload the dishwasher instead of waiting to see if my husband will unload it first. I push myself with my work.

I work on my happiness by trying to follow my happiness resolutions each day, and the better I feel physically, the more able I am to keep my resolutions.

We’re happy, did you know it?

Gretchen Rubin had an a-ha moment while riding the bus one day with her daughter. Just like any ol’ day they were heading to elementary school when her daughter burst out with joy about the city scenery. And it struck Gretchen that THIS was life. There was no magical, evolved place to arrive at. Everyday was an opportunity to be happy.

So she gave herself a year to “test-drive every principle, tip, theory, and scientific study” on happiness. And the Happiness Project was born. Her blog is wildly popular (because it’s inspiring and useful. We especially like this Wednesday Tip on cutting down what you buy,) and her book comes out next year!

She interviewed us about our happiness metrics. It made us stop…and smile. You should try these questions on for yourself. This was one of our favourites:

Have you ever been surprised that something you expected would make you very happy, didn’t – or vice versa?
