Skin cancer is quickly becoming a major concern, once people thought getting too much sun was nothing more than a little sun burn. More recently however myths and facts have intertwined, dangerous cancer causing UV rays have made even working outside without sun block almost unthinkable to some people.

Even still, everybody loves that glow of a fresh tan that you can only get at the beach. If only there was another way to get that tan without having to risk UV overexposure. Luckily for you, now you can, you can get a safe and realistic tan quickly and easily using a sunless tanning lotion.

A sunless tanning lotion is a mixture that darkens your skin tone to simulate that of an actual tan, It is convenient, as you can apply it at any time of the day, and is completely water proof so you never need to worry about it washing off if you decide to swim. At this time there is only one ingredient that the FDA currently approves of for use in sunless tanning products, the colorless sugar DHA. The way DHA works is by reacting with dead skin cells to change the color of your skin. Because you naturally shed dead skin cells, it is important to shower and scrub first before applying the lotion so that it is used only on fresh skin. DHA is safe to use, in fact, the Environmental Working Group, an organization that helps protect children by monitoring toxic chemicals that may be located in our air, water, food, and even ordinary household products, lists DHA as being 0 risk. The most severe being mild skin irritation according to the MSDS sheet, another resource for potentially hazardous materials. This is good news for you, as this means you are not simply trading one risk for another.

DHA contains no added sugars, and works great, so if you want to give yourself a darker skin color without risk, give it a try. Lotions that can provide a sunless tan is available in great variety as well, there are tinted lotions to let you know where you have hit and where you haven’t, foams that dry faster, and even sprays that can coat your body evenly without any effort. Typically though a tanning lotion should be applied every 4-7 days so be sure to keep track of the last time you used it.

Tanning salons also provide support for sunless lotions, at an artificial tanning salon you can find experts who have extensive experience in applying various kinds of lotions at different thicknesses, and have worked with many different skin tones. Weather you decide to do it yourself or have a professional handle the job, the important thing is that it is a safe alternative to normal tanning.
