Steve Harvey: Creative Faith

Profiles | October 20th, 2008 by Keiko Lee-Hem

GRAPHIC DESIGNER/WEB DEVELOPER

Founder (Jack of all trades) of Thirdeye Communications Corp, I have helped businesses plan and execute marketing communications initiatives for the past 12 years. From trade-show booths to web applications, my trade hats include business analyst, requirements and strategy, graphic design and development. A strong entrepreneurial spirit has taken me into photography, catering, food styling, music and a go-to guy within my peer group for business advice and my quirky (but wise) perspective on how to achieve their “take over the world” goals. Currently I am the acting webmaster for Carrieanddanielle.com, meetthemanager.com, weatherhaven.com and consult a handful of local entrepreneurs.

How did you you arrive at your Style Statement?

Upon becoming part of the C&D family, completing a Style Statement was a must. Carrie - via telephone - conducted the process and to be honest, I was not exactly sure what to expect. I did the surface reading and had a high level understanding of what it was all about, but I wasn’t prepared for the deep impact of the final result. I thought it would be a Myres Briggs type scenario but instead of getting ENFJ, I was going to find out what scarf to wear with my biker jacket and what spoon I should use for the sorbet between the snails and fois gras terrine.

Well…it wasn’t like that at all. It was so much more. It was powerful as astrology. It was defining like a successful milestone with your shrink. It was as unique and personal as my perspective…and that is why I can relate…and why it works.

What does your Style Statement mean to you?

Perspective is everything to me. It’s freewill, individuality, wisdom, inspiration, logic and is my shrine which fuels everything I do. And if I can keep fear and stubbornness out of the mix, it acts as my very own personal jury, providing me the verdict for growth and being. Perspective…we all have one but it is the only thing which separates us, makes us unique. My style statement helped define my perspective of me.

How do you interpret your first and second words?

CREATIVE
re-enforced my overwhelming desire to express myself in my very own way - to build, create a reaction, to share, and define my version of beauty. It gives me clarity and confidence of my vision, my ideas, and the ethic and intent behind this offering to my clients and friends alike. I now have clarity to a complex ideal: I am not in art for business, I am in business for art.

FAITH
. I am a deep thinker and have the capacity to include every possible variable in the thought process. But there are certain things I just know. The goat (being a Capricorn) is sure footed and knows his path before the journey starts. I trust my beliefs, intuition and old-soul wisdom, and have Faith in the universe. My principals, loyalty, values and my commitment to the truth rule me like Saturn. These things do not need to be analyzed - a pretty good feeling indeed.

How has your Style Statement been useful to you? i.e. How do you apply it to your life?

I move more freely through my spaces…creating, designing and presenting to the world this thing called expression. Each time something is discovered, analyzed, concluded and filed away in the vault. The system works more efficiently. I’m a little more self aware and more importantly, self accepting.

When I might get stuck, creatively or otherwise, I can quickly quiet the cynic, knowing why I might trigger and accept it - change it. I have yet to fully commit to the vision board concept, but my Style Statement Look & Feel is beside my monitor to feed from. Without arrogance, I do and can say….”Wow, I am pretty damn cool”.

I’m a better listener and more relaxed. I know almost instantly when something is not working for me. In the end, it’s not really a practice on how I integrate it into my life - it is just being me, knowing who that is, and setting goals and making decisions based on that certainty.

Finally, people make the world go around. The concept of being authentic in so often considered to be a direct benefit to self. Indirectly, having my very own Brand (Creative Faith), people see me in a more accurate way. Amazing for mating, required for close friendships and absolutely brilliant for business.

What inspires you?

Honesty and passion are very inspiring. When I connect with a friend or even a stranger on an intense, genuine level and see their enthusiasm, whether its a great dinner they made or a new CD of their favorite band…that’s amazing.

When someone takes a big risk and goes against the norm and succeeds…very inspiring. To me, this is one of the truest forms of artistry…committing to your craft.

Golf. Its a new found passion of mine and has changed the way I think. My attitude and ego have been put in their place time and time again and the result has sometimes purged frustration. But more often, it has sparked the competitor and student in me. Golf is not just about mechanics. It’s about insight, good judgment, commitment and guts…trusting your approach and going for it. Not to mention the game has taken me to some of the most beautiful sights in nature.

What would you like to revolutionize?

One thing is the education curriculum for young people. I know some systems have focused more on social studies, but I would really like to see more options for kids and parents alike. By no means do I down play the value of mathematics and grammar, but if there was a good way to transfer wisdom in the school system, there would be huge benefit.

Transportation. We need teleportation and we need it soon.

Bit of a ironic rant here, but I’d like to change the way media and advertising is regulated. Over time, this industry has done more damage to the human condition then a benefit. In some cases ethics have been stretched too far for my liking. We really are odd creatures when its comes to the material world, status, silicone and the red carpet. The entire authenticity movement helps us to counter-act jaded priorities and de-program all the trickery we have been exposed to. I fight with this one because I am a business man and in marketing.

This is a huge reason why something like a Style Statement is so important. Trust the desires, choices and gut feelings within. Create your own brand. Kinda silly to let a bunch of executives do that for you, no?

Where in the world have you, or do you, feel most at home—and why?

First and foremost, where the flame resides…the kitchen. I’m a provider and find totally peace when I’m cooking, plus I am in high creative form.

I love the peeks of a mountain golf course where I can see for miles, admire the mind of an natural architect and embrace the best game on earth.

There is something about Asia for me…a past life thing maybe. Some of the best experiences of my life have been with my backpack in some small village wandering markets and sitting with the mothers and grandmothers while they prepare food, peddle their wares or just squat under their covered stalls to avoid the sun. No words exchanged, just a smile, nod or curious glance. Effortless comfort.

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be? (Forget about comfort or practicality - what would you feel amazing in?)

A fresh out-of-the-dryer pair of Seven jeans, fitted long sleeve Hugo Boss sweater, black leather boots and my Raymond Weil.

What are you known for?

Known for my brutal honesty and the foot which spends more time in my mouth then on the ground. Loyalty to fault. “Steve, you’re so Metro” “Steve, you’re so sensitive”. Cooking and bringing people together. Quirkiness and lack of desire to conform. Desire to connect. I can see the big picture very quickly - insight and intuition. Grasp vast concepts with minimal effort. People trust me or try very hard to.

Books, movies or music that have inspired you?

Books:

The Souls Code by James Hillman - Answered so many questions to my personal evolution.

Golf for Enlightenment by Deepak Chopra - My first mid-life lesson in magic and helped me broaden my scope of the human spirit.

Movies:

Blade Runner - Simply…brilliant

Thin Red Line - Amazing score and cast and one of those films that really sucked you into the moment.

Into The Wild - In a weird way the lead reminded me of me. Sean Penn is world class.
Girl with a Pearl Earring - Every frame is a canvas - beautifully shot. (Watch in HD!)

Music:

Tool (Aenima): Writing, arrangements, and mood…unparalleled.
Radiohead (The Bends & OK Computer): I think these albums had the same impact on me as The White Album had on the generation before me.

Opeth (Watershed): No other album like it. Extreme diversity gives me everything I need in music…from aggression, progressive time signatures to bliss.
