Staffing Your Home Based Business, Taking The Right Approach

Money | December 1st, 2009

So you’ve come to the point where you need to staff your home based business. When it comes to that point in your home business endeavor  there are some considerations that you need to make before you make the decision and move forward with all of your hiring decisions.

This is by far an incomplete list; however, it is more of a general guideline on the things that you should take into consideration when making your decisions. You most likely know what you’re looking for in a person but you might not be seeing it from the other side on what the person interviewing for your home business feels.

Take some of the following into thought:

  • Make sure any of your potential future employees are going to be comfortable working out of your home office. Establish ground rules and guidelines and make sure that everyone is in tune with the way things will work before even getting started. If you don’t do this it’s doomed from the outset.
  • Choose an area that is going to be used only for meetings. Having this separate place for business meetings can be more of a help then you might think.
  • Consider the bathroom arrangements. While it may not be something of importance to you it likely will be to your employee. If you should have a bathroom that is close to where you’re setup for your home office consider making this the work facility and keep it as such.
  • Provide a liberal amount of vacation time. Working out of a home office is something that is very stressful. Establish this liberal amount of time but make it clear what your expectations are to make sure that the work of your business gets done. That’s just as important as making your employee comfortable; however, the two do go hand in hand.
  • Keep a specific work entrance and exit. It gives it more of an office feel and can go a long way.

Those are all things that you need to take into consideration when you’ve hired someone but when it comes to the interview process you need to let whoever is coming in that you are a home office not a brick and mortar business. Your potential employee needs to be prepared to drive up to a home and you should be prepared for them.

Be clear about your business, why you’re running it at home, your plans for the future and what exactly they will be doing. Hiring someone for something that is home based can be very confusing for the potential employee.

Finally, take into thought the things that you might think of if you were going to apply at a home for a job. What would you think and take that into account when you’re hiring and know you’re picking the right person for your position.
