Every four years I am glued to the TV watching the summer Olympics. I am moved by the relentless courage and commitment of athletes. I get choked up watching their blood sweat & tears and yesterday Canada’s Simon Whitefield showed true grit putting everything into the men’s triathlon and came away with silver. Several times during the run he dropped off to fight back.
“I rolled up behind them, and I said, ‘You just made the biggest mistake you ever made.’ “ Whitfield said.”‘F— it. Here we go.’ That’s what I thought. If you’re going to beat me, you’re going to hurt so much doing it.”
“To come back and to battle back a couple of times and to have just the wonderful preparation, the wonderful team we have, to all come together like that, it was just spectacular,” he said.
Simon gave thanks to the team that supported him; his wife and daughter Pippa, his coach, fellow athletes, personal chef. As a former athlete I know that a village is what we all need to be our best. How can we focus on our big audacious goal and get the support we need? What is needed to hold you up in times of fatigue, lack and insecurity?
For me it is being clear of my desire, focusing on those desires and asking for help. I am the most touched and inspired when I hear athletes, people give thanks. And in order to give thanks one needs to be open to being helped.
Thank you to all those that have paved the way for all the athletes in China to fulfill their dreams!
