To whom will you show your appreciation today?
Daily | June 23rd, 2008
“If the only prayer you ever say is Thank You, that would be enough.” – Meister Eckhart. A note, a quick call, flowers delivered. Your partner, the high school teacher who believed in you, your very best friend who makes you laugh ’til you cry — there are so many people worth appreciating. Gratitude. Just because.

Carrie says: After eating ice cream last night, I realized: no shooting tooth pain! Because I dislike going to the dentist, it has never occurred to me to show my appreciation to him. My dentist is great I am going to send him a thank you card!
Danielle says: I’m going to mail a thank you card to my physiotherapist TODAY. She makes a major contribution to my well being and all I ever do is say “thanks”, write check, and dash out the door. And I’ve just written in my day-timer: call Meme (that’s French slang for Grandma) TODAY.

Dan. We are a team–partners in everything we do. He is the most supportive man, he believes in me–no matter what. Imagine the luck. It’s 1:36 in the morning, I’m on a deadline, and he’s working to keep me company. We are both certifiable–even partners in crazy.

My mum. After watching her only girl (that’s me) go round the world a few times (and then some) with less time than she’d like with me back in Melbourne, and holding her breath from reports from Sudan and the like, when I announced it was time to start thinking about work in Istanbul or New York, she just looked thrilled and told me how pleased she was. She was lying. But I love her for it.

I will show my appreciation to my cousin, Terry. I’m leaving shortly to fly to my birthplace, Saint John, NB where I lived for the first ten months of my life. I will be staying with Terry in the house which once belonged to our grandparents. I will meet cousins, from my father’s side of the family, whom I’ve never met. I will visit a cemetery where every monument bares my maiden name! I will walk to the ocean, just three blocks away, every day it doesn’t rain.
I will not return to Saint John in this lifetime. This week is a special, sacred space for me to connect with the place where I was birthed.

Although I don’t see her professionally, my friend and life coach Diane. If I added up the hours we have spent talking about life, I would owe her billions. She’s priceless. I will send a hand-written thank-you note today letting her know that she is not only a good friend but a fabulous life coach, too.

I want to say thank you to Kari, a women I volunteer with. She is everything I strive to be, compassionate, kind and respectful. She gave me a huge hug today, which I really needed. It made me so so happy! Thank you, Kari, you made my day!

My husband. A wonderful man and father.

I am going to Thank my Husband today. He has been on vacation for a week, I pick him up at the airport tonight & today is our wedding anniversary. (7 years) We’ve been working on a project for the past 10 weeks and he has done an incredible job, which was very apparent this week while he was gone.

My daughter, Emily who frequently calls to say “I love you”….even in the middle of a work day …. whether she is living close by or away, she stays in touch. She must get it from her father, who calls or presents a rose at the end of the day when things have become a little more challenging than usual, or helps me to get caught up at work on a beautiful summer day on the weekend …. life is good!

Minha Amiga,
I just received your call and I am amazed and so greatful to have you in my life. You have brought so much joy into my world. I’ve always wanted a sister and God sent me you. I have no words to describe what your encouragement, sincere love and “kookiness” mean to me. I so admire your strength and passion for life. I am so much better because of you.

My Sweetheart. I try to show him appreciation every day, but today is his birthday, so it’s extra special. I took him whitewater rafting yesterday (his favorite thing in the world) to celebrate.

My mom is an amazing woman. She raised 9 children, has 27 grandchildren, of which some she has pratically raised and 28 great grandchildren. She will defend her family at all costs. We love and appreciate her for all she has given and sacrificed for us.

My mommy-she’s always giving! I wrote thank you notes to everyone that has contributed to my life lately…and sent them out today…what a coincidence that whom will you show your appreciation is the question today. The message at church Sunday was COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS…and I started writing down what I was grateful for…the car that was given me by the church for FREE….the career I have saving lives in my community (ideal job)…..the new school and moving toward my academic goals….my family (parents and grandparents are still alive and well)….my mental health (working at a mental health clinic…you can never take being in your right mind for granted). Food in the fridge….(millions or more are hungry)….A place to live, that I own (millions or more are homeless)….So today, I won’t complain…I’ll Thank God for all my blessings and thank others, too.

Today I will share my thanks with my son’s Grade 4 teacher Kim Galloway. She is always positive and energetic and willing to take a moment to chat about Noah. It’s not an easy age to teach and I admire her commitment. Plus today she is putting on a year end show for the parents which I know takes hours of extra work. http://www.snickerdoodles.typepad.com p.s. I love Sarah Ban Breathnach!

My boyfriend. I have spent the past 10 years putting off taking another road test after I failed twice. He has pushed me, encouraged me, made me believe in myself and trust my own abilities. He was patient through my frustration, tears, and phobias. No one has ever motivated me as much as he has. I’m going to take the test tomorrow and no matter what the end result is, I’m so grateful that he has stood by me and helped me to acheive a goal I thought I’d never reach.

My grandmother, who holds our whole family together from far Alaska with the wonderful letters and cards that she sends. No matter what is going on in her life (and there has been so much!), she always takes the time to reach out. That is so precious and I love her for it.

Without hesitation, Olivier, my infinitely amazing husband.
He was so strong and loving as he comforted me this morning when I found out a very close friend’s mother is dying of cancer.
Later while I was sitting in a parked Metro car two men terrorized the Metro car in front of mine over a football/soccer game. (Yelling, screaming, threatening violence.)
Afterward, I exited shaken, only to find myself standing at the entrance of a grocery store where a very nice man honked at me, started laughing and tried to hit me with is car.
I called my husband who calmed me with his humor and an offer of lunch at my favorite place.
He comforted me again after the DIV messed up the paper work on my car I have been waiting almost a year to drive and we had to wait another hour. (The DMV is not pleasant no matter what country you are in or what letters they call themselves by!)
He looked at me confidently this evening as he signed on our dream apartment even though the price was more than I expected.
He just peeked his head in my office and asked if he could bring me anything or run me a bath. I asked him if he knows how amazing he is?
He said, “Isn’t that what you would expect from your husband?”
My reply, “Who could not appreciate that?”

Benita. For the patience, the effort, the courage, the smiles, the love and sharing an equal passion at the dinner table!

God. For all the blessings, all the relationships, all the support that I receive from family, friends, colleagues near and far.

my guy! Not only has he taken me on two amazing trips already this year to Mexico and Paris but he also rubs my feet – whenever I need it which is a LOT:) He sees me and knows me better than anyone else and after 18 years of being together, we can still sing badly in the car at the top of our lungs and laugh. Lucky me!!!

I will show appreciation to the people that show me respect – friends, family, whoever!

I want to show my appreciation to you Carrie and Danielle for bringing us your beautiful book. I LOVE the book and wish that I had heard about you before. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your inspiration to my life.

To God for the safe return of my son Matthew from Iraq after serving 15 months.

My partner in life & love, Doug. We’ve been living apart for almost a year (me with kids & him solo) as he’s going to school for his PhD. (The previous statement is a disclaimer for the next one). I wrote him a poem about why I love & appreciate him & put it on beautiful themed powerpoint (said need for disclaimer) with music. Just sent it zinging off to Nairobi for him to read.

My two kitties. They are an unconditional source of support and humor and are always ready to snuggle and listen whenever I am upset. I am so grateful to have my two boys as roommates, especially when they remember to “think inside the box.”
June 23rd, 2008 at 6:21 pm
The two young men who report to me at work. Implemented a new IT system this weekend and both conducted themselves honorably while pushing to get things we needed done completed, were results oriented and had wonderful attitudes throughout the process. They are a joy to lead.
June 23rd, 2008 at 6:23 pm
I forgot to mention that I stopped at Starbucks this morning and bought them little gift cards and wrote a handwritten note to both of them to tell them what I really appreciated about their performance over the weekend’s activities.

To Moses: This man came into my life 5 years ago and has been such a blessing and role model for my boys. He’s supportive and would give the world. I appreciate him for being himself and I thank God for blessing me to meet such a wonderful man.

The DMV, DPS, DHSMV or whatever you call it can always be simplified by going to dmv.com and cutting out government BS

That's a great idea Ellen. My hubby loves rafting too, and this weekend I'm planning to take him out rafting. He's a workaholic so this weekend I'll be the one paddling for him as he relaxes and enjoys the view of the trip!
