Questions You Should Ask When Choosing A Yoga Workshop

Wellness | December 12th, 2009

There is a proliferation of yoga workshops in every city now that the many benefits of yoga are coming to light after years of research. However, not every yoga workshop is as efficient as the next. There are many parameters that go into making a yoga class successful and effective for the students and it is important to ensure that there parameters are in place when you choose your yoga class. Here are some of the things to look out for and questions to ask when choosing one of the many yoga classes available.

What Style Of Yoga is Offered at the Yoga Class?

Yoga is a highly adaptable science of keeping the body and the mind fit. In fact, its adaptability is one of the main reasons it has survived over 5 millennia. As a consequence, a number of different styles of yoga have been developed over the years. Every style of yoga is tailor-made to suit the requirements of a specific audience. For instance, there is yoga for kids and yoga for teens as well as yoga for hypertension and anxiety disorder. The most basic and entry level style of Yoga is called Hatha Yoga. Hatha yoga is a series of asanas (yoga poses) and pranayama (yoga breathing techniques). If you are learning yoga for the first time, it is best that you start with simple yoga like Hatha Yoga. Attempting advanced yoga without training your body can lead to injuries.

Is The Yoga Instructor Certified?

This is a very important question to ask when you are considering a number of yoga classes. The experience of yoga instructors may vary, but it is important that they are certified. Yoga Alliance is the accreditation body for all yoga instructors worldwide. A yoga instructor would have to have a minimum level of training in techniques, human anatomy, teaching methodology, yoga philosophy as well as practical experience to get certified by Yoga Alliance. This is a surefire way of ensuring that you are placing your body and mind in the hands of an instructor who is trained and equipped to deal with them.

How Large Are The Yoga Classes?

This is another important aspect to consider when choosing amongst different yoga classes. A yoga class which is very large is not the most ideal place to learn yoga. Every yoga beginner needs special attention to ensure that he is holding all yoga poses correctly. Holding a yoga pose incorrectly can cause injury as well as internal damage. In a class that is very large, it is impossible for the yoga instructor to check and correct the yoga poses of all his students. Additionally, in beginner classes, there may be a number of students who cannot get into specific yoga poses. In such cases, a yoga pose can be modified to allow a practitioner to hold it. In a class that is very large, a yoga instructor may be unable to cater to the needs of all his students who need modification.
