PRK Eye Surgery Procedure

Healing, Health & Wellness, Vision correction | January 18th, 2010 2 Comments

The results that are seen from prk eye surgery are slow and gradual. Surgeons elect for prk eye surgery when treating individuals who have large pupils and thin corneas otherwise lasik is generally chosen.

PRK is an effective method for addressing both near and far sightedness. For nearsightedness the cornea will have to be flattened while for farsightedness steepening is required. Unlike lasik, the PRK method does not need any incisions to be made. PRK uses an excimer laser along with an ultraviolet light, which is used for reshaping the cornea to change its curve. After the cornea is reshaped properly, it will then start to focus light properly on to the eye as well as the retina. This results in better and clear vision.

The laser treatment, Lasik is highly effective to treat near and far sightedness and astigmatism. Here the difference is that LASIK uses microkeratome, which is the surgical instrument that helps create the corneal flap. Part of the flap stays fixed to one’s eye as the remaining is pulled up and this exposes your cornea. A laser then starts to sculpt the corneal surface and finally the flap will be put back in place. Creating the flap is painless and usually takes less than a minute. Complications in the flap are possible in a few rare cases although they are treatable by repositioning of the flap. Some difficulties during the creation of the flap could require a second surgery to fix. Patients of this laser treatment usually experience far less discomfort. The patients also report better vision in comparison to PRK.

In LASIK procedure, the laser eye surgeon uses no stitches as the flap stays in place simply because of the natural pressure present in the eyes. Eye drops are prescribed for a week later. Many of the patients even return to their regular activities in three days. Majority of eye healing takes place in the first week. It could require three months for vision to stabilize completely. Most patients will experience about 5-6 hours of discomfort when surface layer starts to heal and to help with this, pain medication is prescribed. Due to all these advantages, people choose Lasik over other procedures.

In PRK, medication of the eye is used. Clear contacts can be placed on the operated eye to protect it against any infection. These lenses usually are removed after five days. The surface starts healing and the complete process of healing can take about four months.

During the healing process, medications help with the healing and also prevent infections. Many patients undergoing PRK take pain medication during the few days following the surgery. This is required because a large majority of the pain fibers of the cornea are on the surface area and this is the area that PRK surgery affects.

The prk eye surgery is a tied and tested form of laser surgery which any qualified laser eye surgeon can perform. It is an alternative to the popular lasik surgery.
