Presbyopia Correction Options

Wellness | January 18th, 2010

Presbyopia, the condition where the eye- lens cannot change its focusing distance occurs due to ageing. Unlike any normal eye that easily switches its focus from far to near, clear focus is missing here when changing distances. Another term used for the condition is accommodation of the eye.  Presbyopia, or “aging vision”, affects every one of us at some point in time after we turn 40. This aging vision makes it very difficult for people to focus on close objects or even read small print. There are a few presbyopia correction options available.

Surgical options are available which can treat presbyopia. One of the examples is conductive keratoplasty, also known as NearVision CK treatment. This makes use of radio waves to increase the curvature in the cornea for a more plus prescription to fix near sightedness. The procedure is done on one eye when monovision correction is required. Though NearVision CK can effectively treat presbyopia, this correction is only temporary and can diminishe over time.

Presby lasik is a new surgery for correcting presbyopia, which is now undergoing clinical trials in the U.S. The innovative procedure makes use of an excimer laser to create a multi focal ablation on the cornea directly, or the clear surface of the eye. This makes vision clear at multiple distances a possibility. Lasik is also used for monovision, where one eye gets corrected for seeing close objects while the other eye remains the same and helps with distant vision.

An experimental surgery being studied is the one where injecting an elastic gel into a capsular bag, which is a structure of the eye containing the natural lens. This gel is supposed to replace the original lens and function as a new, elastic lens. Experiments are also focused on treating eye’s hardened lens with laser and increasing its flexibility. With the very recent introduction of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses, some people who undergo cataract surgery have a chance at achieving clear vision across all distances.

There is an elective procedure called as refractive lens exchange, which may enable replacing the eye’s inflexible lens with artificial lens which will correct presbyopia, enabling multifocal vision.

Even when you undergo LASIK or prk eye surgery when you are young and obtain perfect vision, you can still develop the condition of presbyopia, which typically begins around the ages of 40 – 50. Lasik or prk eye surgery in no way can prevent that. Presbyopia refers to the inability of one’s eye to focus, usually gets noticed when the fine print starts to blur.

Some doctors don’t agree about the causes of presbyopia. Most of them believe that stiffening of eye’s lens is what results in the condition. There are theories that suggest presbyopia might be related to continuous growth of the lens.

Presbyopia is a condition that is going to affect each and every one of us. There is no use denying it. It is a simple and nature progression of life. Thankfully, there are presbyopia correction solutions available to help us all deal with this, and let us continue with our normal lives.
