Presbyopia Correction Of The Eye

Health & Wellness | January 18th, 2010

Presbyopia usually begins around 40, when most people experience difficulty to focus on objects near them like when reading, sewing or at the computer. You cannot escape presbyopia. This is true even if you have not experienced any kind of problem with vision before. Even nearsighted people notice that their near vision doesn’t get corrected with their usual prescription glasses as well as contact lenses which normally correct distance vision. When people start developing symptoms of presbyopia, they will hold books, newspapers, magazines, menus and any other reading materials very close to their face in order to be able to focus properly. Also, when they perform work with less viewing distance, like embroidery or writing, they can develop bad cases of headaches, eye strain and even feel fatigued. Presbyopia correction of the eye is necessary to be able to see properly and not be hindered or handicapped in any way by this condition. Many people are ready to consider eye surgeries to help solve this condition, but eye surgeries may not be the best solution.

What are the main causes of presbyopia? Presbyopia results due to the onset of age. This differs from near sightedness, astigmatism and far sightedness, which depend on the shape of one’s eyeball and are usually due to genetic and environment factors. Presbyopia is believed to have stemmed from gradual thickening of the natural lens in the eye and also some loss of flexibility of the lens.

All these age related problems occur due to changes inside the protein in your lens. This hardens the lens and it becomes less elastic over a period of time. These changes can also take place in all the muscle fibers present around the lens. With reduced elasticity, the eye has a hard time focusing the light properly especially for objects that are very close. Other theories also exist, but they are not very popular or as well supported.

Though many people consider laser eye treatment there are some simple solutions available. These solutions are cheaper than any kind of laser eye treatment. Eye glasses with bifocal and progressive addition lenses are the most commonly used meant of presbyopia correction. Bifocals mean that there are two points spectacle lens with different focus. The large part of the lens in spectacles contains a prescription for distant vision and the lower area of this lens will have stronger near prescription. Progressive addition lenses are like the bifocal kind of lenses, but here there is a more gradual transition between the two prescriptions. There are no visible lines in between the two areas. Reading glasses are another option which is available. Unlike in the case of bifocals and PALs, which are worn all day, reading glasses are worn only during close work.

If one wears contact lenses, the eye doctor can prescribe reading glasses that can be worn  while the contacts are in the eye.

Because the human eye lens keeps changing as one grows older, presbyopic prescription will also need increasing over time as well. One can expect an eye care doctor to prescribe a correction for near distance work as required.
