Prepaid Credit Cards: Setting and Keeping a Budget

Budgeting, Money, Wealth | March 2nd, 2010 1 Comment

At one point in time or another virtually everyone is going to have to set a spending limit or a budget. A lot of times it can be very hard for someone to stay within the limits set and just as difficult to keep track of finances. When someone has problems staying within set limits or is having problems keeping track of finances this will usually always lead to someone overspending. This can be even harder for a liberal spending woman that purchases a lot of clothes, perfumes, etc… It’s made even harder if you’re used to being able to spend what you want on things and then something in life changing those circumstances.
One of the ways you can help yourself set a budget for what you’re going to spend when you go somewhere is through using a prepaid credit card. Below are some of the steps that will help you to stay within your budget through the use of prepaid credit cards.
Set Your Budget Realistically
Although it’s going to depend on what you’re budgeting for you’ll need to set a realistic goal for that purchase that you intend to spend on. This can be done for a one time purchase but is good for things that you want or need to buy consistently while making sure that you’re not overspending.
Think about the types of things that you are going to want or need and write everything down. Do research on what the item(s) will likely cost. Make sure that you’re allowing for some wiggle room but you should make sure at the same time that you’re limiting it to an amount that will work in with the rest of your bills and income.
Purchase the Prepaid Credit Card
Once you have your budget set it’s time to get your prepaid credit card. You can find a prepaid card in convenience stores, shopping stores like a Wal-Mart and even online. Having the prepaid card is going to allow you to have the freedom of spending your money anywhere while forcing you to stick to your spending limit as you can’t charge more than you have on your prepaid account.
Start Shopping
The prepaid debt cards can be used at any retailer that accepts Visa or MasterCard and you can use them for purchasing online too as a credit card just like you would a bankcard. They come with online tools allowing for you to keep track of your remaining balance. Use this to keep track of where you’re spending the most money and what the best use for any remaining money would be.
Continually keeping track of your funds is going to let you know when you’re running low on money and will allow you to put your focus on the parts of your personal spending are the highest and if things need to be adjusted so you can continue to budget your money effectively and accordingly.
Stay Within Budget
When the money on your card is gone you can no longer charge on it so you’re automatically prevented from any overspending. If you should need more for something you can always load more money but you should be careful when doing this as you don’t want to just reload anytime as it defeats the purpose of the prepaid card.
Spending can get really tight at times and the prepaid card is the perfect way to make sure you’re budgeting for any need or want. Using the prepaid card can help you to be more responsible with your money and in the end it’s something that you’ll appreciate.
