Guided Imagery

  • See it
  • Hear it
  • Smell it
  • Feel it
  • Taste it

Visualization is similar but a variation on a traditional meditation technique. It uses guided imagery as a stress reducer. It entails imagining and putting a scene into your mind which is one that makes you feel and puts you at peace. It doesn’t matter what it is, just something that does that for you, it could be spending time at the ocean, your favorite spot when you were a child, a quiet walk on your favorite path, etc… whichever serves to be the most calming for you. The nice thing is you can do this all with your mind, no need for a therapist or an audio recording.

You need to close your eyes and then let all of your worries fade away. Imagine that restful place you chose before, doing so as vividly as you possibly can, see it, hear the sounds, smell the surroundings, and the feelings both physically and emotionally. It works the best if you are sure to include as many of the sensory details as possible. For instance, you’re sitting on the sand at the oceanfront.

  • See the sun as it goes down over the water
  • Hear the sound of the waves crashing
  • Smell the ocean and the surroundings
  • Feel the warm sand between your toes
  • Taste the clean fresh air

Stress Relief through Yoga

Involving both stationary and moving poses both in combination with deep breathing, yoga can be a great technique for stress relief.

Since injuries are very common when yoga is practiced without the proper knowledge and training it is best to either hire a professional or find a suitable class. You’ll want to find classes that will emphasize a slow but steady movement along with gentle stretching as those are best suited for stress relief. Once you have a grasp of the basics you could then safely start practicing by yourself or with others still if you desire but then you’d be able to tailor the practice to your needs.

Keys

Examine your fitness level or if you should have any medical issues before you join any class. There are specific classes tailored to fit specific needs; such as, prenatal, adaptive, etc… Also look for an environment that is low-key where you can learn at your own pace. You should never extend yourself beyond what you feel is comfortable for you. If you encounter pain back off at the first sign. For whatever poses are too challenging for your current health/fitness level the instructor can show you alternative poses for those.
