Natural Health – Is It Really Possible?

Health & Wellness | January 14th, 2010 No comments

Natural health is the latest buzz word not without reason. Man has made enormous progress in the last two hundred years. As the most intelligent species on the planet he has been able to adapt his natural environment to suit his requirements unlike other animals who adapt themselves to suit their external environment. He is able to grow his own food, rear animals for food and his quest for getting better and more out of his surroundings has changed the face of the earth like never before.

The soil that grows our food is rich in nutrients that make plants and trees grow strong and in turn enrich us through our food. Repeated use of the land and the surrounding environment has depleted it of its riches. Pollution and the use of chemicals and artificial fertilizers have only added to the problem.

In such a scenario it is but natural that the food that we eat is devoid of nutritional value of any benefit to the human body. Hence, we have to eat more of the same thing to sustain our bodies. Nutrients in food are the key life giver to all creatures big and small. When this is lacking there are dire consequences to our health. Starting from lower immunity to fight the common cold to developing cancer, from early onset of dementia to birth defects our health is affected in every possible way due to the food we eat. This is the key driver for a growing trend towards a more natural way of life.

A mini revolution of sorts is unfolding in the field of organic food. There is a growing demand for fruits and vegetables grown using genetically unaltered seeds, with no chemical fertilizers and pesticides and processed food with no added flavours, preservatives or colours. There is a renewed interest in non invasive natural medicine that has been practised in the eastern parts of world like India and China for centuries.

The idea behind this revolution is for man to go back to nature. This is based on the principle that nature knows what’s best for man and everything that man requires is already provided for naturally. Hence by reconnecting with nature and its produce we are able to bring more balance in our body thereby reducing the harmful effects on our health. This will pave the way for us to be fit and live a long fruitful life.

Although the proponents of this idea are many there is little to show that this method of food production is sustainable for mass production. And even so it would be very expensive and would put additional strain on the earth’s resources in terms of water needs etc. Hence although the nutritional value of naturally produced food is greater and so hence healthier the practicality of its implementation for mass production is still an area requiring more research.

Hence, man today finds himself in this situation where having destroyed nature has realised its value and now wants to turn back time.
