Measures that Encourage Sustainable Businesses
If a business causes no adverse effects on the environment and has no negative impact on the economy or the society at large, it falls under the category of sustainable businesses. To meet the qualifications of being in this category, such businesses are expected to follow strictly a set of human right policies as well as environmental policies. The policies can be drafted and enacted by the founders of the business in question or better still, they can be borrowed from pundits who have been in existence for a while in related fields.
Sustainable business can sometimes be referred to as green businesses. While many of the businesses today are concerned with the bottom line i.e. making profits, sustainable businesses are equally focused on their impact in the global environment as a whole as they are on the bottom line. When talking of the goals of sustainable businesses, it is very common to come across the term the triple bottom line being used which every company purporting to be sustainable has to achieve.
The triple bottom line ensures that in addition to the normal bottom line of a business to make profit, it has to focus on the effect it brings about to the human race and on the planet at large. There are different types of businesses which can, with proper sustainable planning and effective policies emerge as sustainable businesses. Businesses that deal with agriculture, treating water, producing energy, developing technology, and providing transportation can all emerge and function as ideal sustainable businesses. Note also that up-coming businesses have the possibility of embracing sustainable business practices.
Architecture and engineering are areas where sustainable business seems to be making tangible progress. These businesses will not only function sustainably but on the other hand can produce useful green products. For instance, sustainable architecture is quite beneficial independently although it can have an important role to these businesses as the need for office space increases. Such is the importance of promoting and encouraging companies and businesses to be sustainable that even institutions of learning are emerging that work hand in hand with businesses and other stakeholders to foster and encourage sustainable business practices.
As a result, if a business has met the triple bottom line requirement and has successfully implemented sustainable practices, it is awarded with a Seal of Sustainability with the aim of acknowledging and appreciating their efforts and achievements. Both small and big businesses which under their concrete sustainable planning are implementing sustainable practices qualify for the Seal of Sustainability Award and what it more, the award is given to businesses in nearly all sectors of a given economy.
Looking at the list of the recipients of the Seal of Sustainability shows that different kinds of businesses can become sustainable successfully, which can include anything from a local pizza cafe to a water recycling company. Such is the popularity of sustainable businesses that even some employers today expect its top management to further pursue an MBA with a concentration on sustainability.
