Winner 2008 Sundance Film Festival Award: Jury and Audience Prize for World Documentary
The premise of the documentary Man on Wire took my breath away. I had never heard of the Frenchman, Phillippe Petit, and his death-defying walk across an illegally strewn tightrope connecting the Twin Towers together. It occurred on August 7th, my birthday, in 1974. I had to see this movie. I couldn’t believe this really happened.
It did. Man On Wire begins after Phillipe sees a picture of the towers being built at age 17. He felt that they were being built for him. Just so that he could walk across a wire strewn between them. It was and is beyond poetic.
In the years that followed the towers were built, and finally months of logistics and planning took place. It is intriguing to watch the coming together of a team of characters (some friends, some randoms) that would be willing to be involved in pulling off such a feat.
The movie is a fascinating story about what is possible when you have a dream you truly believe in. He said when looking at the wire when he was about to step upon that he considered the consequences, but the call to do it was so great he could not resist. How wonderful to believe so strongly in your own vision that the call to do it far outweighs the risks. Life. Truly lived.
