Making Homemade Wine

Wine | November 6th, 2009 2 Comments

Making homemade wine is something that isn’t just easy but it’s also very budget friendly. Not only that but contrary to popular belief; and perhaps some stigma, it tastes good has a significant amount of alcohol content and you can get away with only around $2 a bottle to make it yourself.

Choose Your Juice

Make a decision on whether or not you want a red or a white wine and choose your juice concentrated based upon that. For instance, if you should want a red wine you should go with a grape or a strawberry juice and if you’re going with a white wine you’ll want to consider a grape or an apple juice.

Avoid – Any citrus juices; such as, orange, tangerine or a grapefruit. These will not work.

Processing

  1. Defrost the juice by putting it into a bowl of warm water for right around an hour.
  2. Using a funnel pour your yeast, sugar and the juice into a milk jug.
  3. Shake your ingredients together.
  4. Fill the rest of the jug with warm, not hot, water. This is going to be what activates the yeast.
  5. Shake everything together with the water again and then take the lid off.
  6. Put a balloon over the top of the milk jug and then wrap a rubber band around the neck of the milk jug in order to ensure the balloon stays on during the entirety of the wine making process.
  7. Finally, set the wine in a dark and warm place, this should be around 70 degrees. The balloon is going to fill with gases as the juice is going through the fermentation process. This will let you know how the process is going.

Finishing

Once the balloon has deflated, about 3-6 weeks, remove it from the jug. You can then put it into a wine bottle and enjoy. You’ll find that a lot of people will just use their own old wine bottles.
