Is Lying Really That Bad? Discuss.

Spirituality | May 2nd, 2008

The Jezebel site, which I dig, by the way, recently posed the question: Do you feel your age?

Well, do you?

I’ve always liked lying about my age. I tell people I’m at least ten years older than I actually am. They look at me dubiously and inevitably say, “You look amazing!”.

Admittedly, that’s the only reason I do it.

But even when I was much younger I would tell people I was older than I really was because I’m small and they’d always think I was two or three years younger. When you’re ten, that’s the biggest possible insult.

And when I started my professional life it was as a 23 year old high school teacher. I was eight years older than my students. I wanted to be older because I thought it would give me more authority, but mostly because the school secretary kicked me out of the staff room on my first day.

But other than lying about your age, or wishing it were something other than what it really is, chronologically, it depends on what we’re talking about in terms of feeling your age.

If it’s at work, my God, I feel my age – and then some. (I was 17 when my family bought its first computer behemoth.) So that’s why I have technical problems at work. “Just hold onto yer britches, sonny – I need my glasses, then you can show me where the on/off switch is!” I know that’s what Dan thinks of me. I know it. He doesn’t say it, but I can tell. I can.

And then at other times I feel way younger than my actual age. Like in my marriage. I pout and do an awful lot of hair-flipping. Not behaviour of a (gasp) thirty-seven year old. But there’s no real manual on What Behaviour Corresponds to What Age.

For the record, since we’re talking about age, I want everyone to know that I am older than my husband because it lends me the chic air of Demi Moore. Now you know. We are SO ALIKE it’s incredible. (I’m often mistaken for her, you know.)

So, do you feel your age? What does age feel like? DISCUSS! No really. Discuss. We want to know.
