Long-lasting Sustainable Solutions

The following are 8 major areas that you can implement to have long-lasting sustainable solutions to ultimately foster global sustainability.

  1. Allow nature to cool food – our forefathers relied on root cellars and cool pantries to store their produce and keep them fresh from the time of harvest until the next season. Even though refrigerators are more convenient, they use up a lot of energy. Root cellars and cool pantries have functions that are irreplaceable by fridges as they can store large quantities of produce and all kinds of foodstuffs for all long as possible without relying on any external power.
  2. Save water – an average person uses around 100-250 gallons of water every day but it is very possible to survive comfortably by 1/10 of this amount. Some of the radical approaches to water conservation include using flow restrictors at shower heads, using low water capacity toilets, switching to using composting toilets, using faucet aerators, diverting gray water to watering plants, trapping rain water from paved regions and roofs for domestic use etc. one can also landscape using drought-resistant native plants to further help save on water.
  3. Use local, native materials – the benefits are numerous such as they naturally blend with the surroundings, they use less fossil fuel when being transported, and more often, they are less probable to be over-processed by the industry.
  4. Use natural occurring materials – similarly, the benefits of using natural materials to foster global sustainability are immeasurable. First of all, natural materials compared to industrial materials are exactly that — natural thus there is no pollution linked to their being manufactured. It is sad to note that for every ton of cement manufactured, a ton of CO2 is released to the atmosphere.
  5. Preserve the forests – even though wood is presumably a renewable resource, people are becoming less mindful of the ecosystems by going beyond sustainable wood harvesting even though they are claiming to look for sustainable building materials.
  6. Recycle or reuse materials – promote the creation of available used materials by recycling and reusing them. This also helps keep the materials away from the landfills and from being transported to be processed further.
  7. Always build to last – we live in a society that believes old buildings should be replaced with new ones. To some extent, this is quite true because of poor choice of building materials, slapdash construction, or/and lack of proper maintenance. However, constructing a house using sustainable building materials might as well last for centuries, and it definitely should do that.
  8. Grow your own produce – did you know that your house can as well nourish you. You can grow salad greens and some herbs all year round. With a glass facing southward, you can devote part of it to greenhouse.
  9. Share facilities – a basic precept of sustainability is to share anything one has with the people who don’t have to foster global sustainability. This significantly reduces the need for pointless duplication of the available facilities and resources. Sharing of facilities provides an individual with more options for living while the environment benefits because of less of industrial activity.
