Launching a Wellness Program for your Employees

This is undoubtedly the age of fitness. And as an employer, you would naturally like your employees to be fit and alert on the job. But do you realize that it takes more than just fitness to get the best out of your personnel? Wouldn’t you like your staff to be complete and whole in every aspect of life, be it physical health or mental wellbeing? Then do consider initiating a wellness program for all the employees in your organization – for your mutual benefit.

You may well question the definition of wellness. Over time, the definitions have been varied, based on the priorities that were prevalent at the time. For instance, in the 1960’s, all that mattered was ‘finding oneself’ and ‘make love not war’ under the influence of mind altering substances. Today, things are very different. Smoking, drinking and drugs are frowned upon – not just legally but also as substances which harm your physical health or alter your state of consciousness.

So how would you define wellness? Different groups of people have different interpretations. However, most people are agreed upon the fact that it definitely implies a fine balance between different aspects of an individual’s life. This would suggest maintaining your equilibrium vis-à-vis your health, family, financial security, career, social obligations, your faith, relationships, and so forth. You could help your employees achieve this state of balance by providing all the support and the facilities required for a wellness program.

To begin with, you could install a gym at the workplace in order to facilitate regular workouts without losing any man hours. A gym at work would definitely help your staff to adjust their schedules to include workouts under a qualified instructor. Well designed exercise classes can take all their health issues into consideration along with their work commitments.

When designed by a fitness professional, exercise classes can be planned to suit the individual requirements of your employees in order to optimize their performances. Exercise classes can be designed to enhance their strengths and minimize their weaknesses, while working to build up their energy and stamina.

Apart from the physical aspect, if you also want to ensure that your employees are always mentally stable and alert, you could try to introduce some complementary therapy. Considering how many options are available today, you really shouldn’t have a problem working out something.

A complementary therapy to build up an individual’s physical and mental strength can include alternative therapies such as yoga, meditation, Pilates, Jazzercise and even belly dancing, to name a few. Each of these works in a different way on some part of the body and mind. This means an individual could be working on building muscle, toning the body, losing weight or even calming the mind. This is in addition to the fringe benefits of a sensible diet and healthy physical fitness regime.

Think about it – if you were to set up a well equipped gym at your office for your staff, they would be only too happy to grab this opportunity to become mentally and physically healthy.
