Lasik enhancement surgery is a procedure that follows the original operation. It is requires when the first LASIK procedure does not give you the results you expect or if some kind of a complication crops up.

In most of the cases, the patients find that excellent results are seen after the first LASIK procedure. Sometimes however, this enhancement treatment is done to help produce better vision because everyone cannot get the twenty-twenty eyesight after a single treatment.

LASIK has successfully treated high levels of near and far sightedness as well as astigmatism but most studies have shown that the best candidates for LASIK are young people with only mild nearsightedness or astigmatism. Though many people that have undergone the LASIK treatment, report having better vision when compared to when they used prescription glasses or contact lenses, there is still a small percentage of patients who report finding no improvement in their eyesight. Some complain that the improvement isn’t as much as they expected.

After the initial surgical procedure the laser eye surgeon will instruct you to keep a track of your vision for a short period of a few weeks. After the treatment is over there is a chance that you will experience blurred images or hazed vision. This is normal but should fade away quickly. If the blurred vision persists, then the laser eye surgeon may suggest that a LASIK enhancement is required.

The LASIK enhancement done by laser eye surgeons is almost the same as the first LASIK procedure, with just one important difference. Specialized tools are used instead of using a microkeratome or laser to create a corneal flap. These tools will help with lifting up the flap made during the previous LASIK procedure. The second process is usually painless. The entire procedure can be done in less than two minutes. After the corneal flap is opened, the surgeon will use an excimer laser and again reshape the cornea. In majority of the cases very little reshaping is sufficient and the enhancement surgery takes a few seconds.

Even though most of these eye surgeries are performed safely, as is the case with all procedures, there are a few risks involved with LASIK surgery enhancements as well. The possible complications remain the same as with the first LASIK procedure. Here there is a potential corneal complication risk as the flap gets pulled up and folded back in the beginning of the second procedure. The result of this can be swelling of eyes, tearing and the usual chances of getting infected. In addition to this, the outer layer of one’s cornea can also run the risk of abnormal growth after this procedure. If the tissue removed was too little and minute then the improvement in vision may not be as great as you expected, and this is the term known as under correction.

When an informed decision is made to undergo laser eye surgery, it makes complete sense as the individual is fully aware of all risks and advantages with the procedures.
