Insurance Billing: Understanding the Process
Insurance billing in a nutshell is a process of submitting paperwork and subsequent documentation to insurance companies in order to get the insurance company to pay out a claim based upon the submitted information.
For example, within the medical community the insurance billing portion is the majority of the office paperwork and some of the offices will hire out billing specialists that only spend their day submitting paperwork to the various insurance companies.
In order to make sure claims are paid the person submitting the billing must be very knowledgeable about the process in order to ensure the payment of the claim. A claim that is a valid one might simply be denied due to inaccurate filing of the claim paperwork.
College Courses
There are a lot of colleges that will offer courses in the practice of insurance billing in order to provide people with a certification in insurance billing for those that want to work in the field. The courses include information that a billing specialist needs to know; such as:
- Anatomy
- Common medical terminology
- Medical procedures
- Detailed discussion on complex claim forms that insurance companies use
There are also thousands of codes that are used for identification of the various procedures that are on the claim forms.
Billing Service Employers
Medical offices, clinics and hospitals all provide the insurance billing as a service to their patients. The patient simply has to pay their copayment at time of service and the provider will take care of the rest. With procedures that are done rather than just a clinic visit the claim is usually submitted and then the patient billed for any balance remainder.
The patient can either pay the balance at that time or if they fell more should have been covered, or they feel it should have been covered in full the patient can file a dispute with the insurance company in the hope of getting the insurer to pay a larger or all of the remaining portion of the bill.
Billing is something very complex; especially when it comes to a patient that has many medical conditions which makes it virtually impossible for a patient to handle an insurance claim billing on their own.
Insurance Companies
Most all insurance companies will work with billing software of one form or another. By implementation and learning of the software it can streamline the billing process since everything can be processed through electronic means.
If it wasn’t kept electronic it would be required to fill out multiple forms manually and each of the multiple forms must be filled out completely accurate or the insurance company is not going to reject just that part, they are going to reject the entire claim without even evaluating it at all.
Unfortunately, due to patient frustration, it’s hard to think of the insurance company as a business and as a business it’s there to make money. This leads to them preferring to reject claims whenever possible. If you are one to get rejected make sure you look at it as the first step of a process, not a final decision. If you feel things are not accurate and you are having multiple issues you should consult with an insurance advocate and on the far end a lawyer that specializes in insurance related matters.
