Information On Vision Correction Procedure

Healing, Health & Wellness, Vision correction | January 19th, 2010 1 Comment

People tired of using spectacles or contacts can consider lasik eye surgery. This is one of the latest surgeries which can correct sight issues. When opting for this procedure it is important to understand clearly what to expect. People should opt for lasik surgery only after getting correct and proper information on vision correction procedure. To be able to see objects normally, the lens and cornea in the eyes should bend, or refract, rays of light to enable focusing onto the retina which is a group of cells which are light sensing and line up behind the eyes. Rays of light are converted by the retina in to impulses that get sent all the way upto the brain, and here they get identified as images. When rays of light on the retina cannot focus properly, the images that are seen start to blur. This is what is known as a refractive error. Spectacles, contact lenses and refractive surgery all try to lessen these malfunctions of the eyes by enabling rays of light to focus properly onto the retina.

  • Because the vision of people younger than 18 tends to continue to change, the patient must be a minimum of eighteen years of age, or even twenty one for some kinds of laser.
  • Pregnancy or nursing conditions can alter the eye’s calculated refraction.
  • Using some specified drugs must be stopped before surgery because the eyes must be of good health and prescriptions should have stability.
  • If myopic, Lasik should be postponed until stabilization of refraction, as there could be a continuous increase in myopia in certain people until the latter part of their twenties.
  • Good health in general is required and necessary. Lasik might not be suggested for people suffering from diabetes and certain other conditions of the eyes, or even cataracts. This should be discussed with the surgeon.
  • One must carefully calculate and compare the rewards and risks. If one is comfortable to wear contact lenses or spectacles, and has gotten used to it, then maybe surgery can be completely avoided. If wearing glasses or contacts is in no way impeding any activity in day to day life, then surgery is purely cosmetic and avoidable.
  • Understand what you expect with the procedure. Are expectations realistic?
  • Ask the doctor about monovision. This is treating an eye for longdistance sight and another eye for neardistance sight. Lasik cannot correct presbyopia in a way that one eye can see at both distance and near. However, with Lasik it is possible to correct one eye for distance and the other for near. If you can manage with this kind of treatment, it can end or lessen your dependence on reading glasses. Sometimes, surgery is only needed on one eye. If the surgeon thinks that you are a candidate, it is very important to find out about all the advantages and disadvantages.

These are some of the things to keep in mind before going ahead with a vision correction procedure. A laser eye surgury can be a safe procedure if one knows all the information about the laser eye surgery beforehand.
