Individual Dental Plans, Protect Your Teeth And Your Wallet
Having an individual dental plan is something that you should consider just like you would for a health insurance policy.
By purchasing an individual dental insurance policy you’ll be able to help offset both the routine care that you need and also any major medical situation that may arise and all in all help you to maintain proper oral health.
When it comes to finding your ideal dental plan it can take some research; however, if you do some of the leg work you’ll be able to find a plan that you’ll both be able to fit into your budget and get the level of coverage that you need.
Current Health Insurance Provider
You’ll find that one of the first places that you can look for a cheaper dental insurance plan is with your current health insurance provider. You’ll find that some of the health insurance companies these days will offer something called riders which can be added to your existing plan for potentially both dental and vision or either or. If your health insurance company offers this you will find that it will be substantially cheaper than if you were to purchase a standalone policy.
Talk With Your Dentist
If the option of your current health insurance provider doesn’t give you the option of a dental rider you should talk with your dentist. The reason to do this is you’ll be able to find what plans are going to be accepted by his or her practice and you can tailor your search accordingly. There are also some discount dental packages that you can purchase that will help you get discounted dental rates so you’ll want to ask about that as well.
The other option that you can go with is a structured plan like an HMO (health maintenance organization) or a PPO (preferred provider organization). HMO coverage you will need to make sure that your dentist is in the HMO network as you have to go to an in network provider in order to get coverage.
The PPO is going to provide you a lot of benefits should the dentist be a provider within the network but even if your dentist isn’t part of the network you will still get some level of a discount. The one thing to remember though is that if the dentist you’re going to is in the network you’ll get a lot more in terms of coverage as there are negotiated rates with the in network providers.
Pay Attention to Coverage
Make sure that you are paying attention to the coverage that you’ll get with all of the procedures that are considered routine; like:
- Fillings
- Teeth cleanings
- Caps
- Other forms of general treatment
With children you’re going to want to pay attention to coverage if they end up needing braces or any other type of corrective dental equipment.
You need to make sure that all of the terms of coverage are clear and that you’re going to get the benefits that you need for other medical needs besides the routine dental procedures. Ask plenty of questions and make sure you know what you’re purchasing before you do.
