Healing, Health & Wellness, Yoga | January 25th, 2010 1 Comment

Yoga originated over 5000 years ago in India, but it is still a relatively new concept in the West and lot about yoga is yet to be understood. Yoga is a science and an art that deals with healthy living. It lays down guidelines and practices that allow you to have a healthy and fit body and mind. Originally, the main purpose of yoga was to prepare the body for the spiritual quest of self awareness. Over time, it has come to encompass all parts of human life including interactions with other people and one’s personal behavior. However, in the west, the most attention is currently given to the physical and mental benefits of yoga. One persistent question that arises is whether yoga music actually helps increase the benefits one derives from yoga. Read on to know more….

Yoga uses controlled body movement and breathing techniques as a way to a healthy and fit body and mind. The body poses are called asanas, while the breathing techniques are called Pranayama. In a sequence of yoga asanas, the pose has to held for a specific amount of time while controlling the mind to focus on the pose and the sensations it causes in the body. This not only helps train the body, it also helps control the mind.

One of the biggest problems yoga practitioners face is that as soon as they are in the yoga pose, their mind starts to get distracted. Whether it is concerns and worries about work, family, finances or health or whether it is daydreams and fantasies, the mind always seems to wander in a matter of seconds. The biggest task is to control the mind and keep it free of distracting thoughts and emotions. Yoga music provides a great way to help you focus your mind.

When you are focusing on yoga music and your yoga asanas, you will find that the mind is not getting distracted very easily. You will find that it is easier to control and keep clear. This is not just an opinion, there is science behind it. Our mind gets inputs from all five senses at all times. When there is some input coming in from any one of the senses, the mind tends to focus on it. So, when yoga music is playing while you perform yoga poses, part of your mind is focusing on the music. This helps in controlling the rest of the mind and keeping it free from other thoughts and emotions. Also, if there were any other auditory disturbances that could have distracted you, they would get absorbed in the sound of yoga music and not distract you from your practice.

There are many different kinds of yoga music available and you can choose any one based on your tastes and preferences. On one hand you can get chants that help focus due to their repetitive quality and on the other hand there are sounds from nature like the sound of birds chirping or steams flowing.
